Idolmania Runs Wild On The Charts!

davidsidol.jpg It's hard to imagine a former Missouri bartender nearly toppling one of the most amazing records in Billboard chart history - unless the bartender in question happens to be David Cook!

This year's champion is alllllllllll over this week's Billboard Hot 100, placing a staggering eleven entries on the list. That's the momost for a single act to score in one week since the Beatles set the record with fourteen songs back in 1964!

Cook's biggest hit at the moment is his finale song "Time Of My Life", which sold 236,000 copies this week. That's an impressive total - but nowhere near as impressive as the total number of sales Cook's seventeen total songs sold this week: 942,000 altogether!

Of course, Cook is benefitting from the promotional deal the Idol poobahs struck with Apple to make all the finalists' songs available. This is also the first year in which an Idol winner's victory song has been made available during the same week it was performed - previously, fans had to wait a few weeks.

And Cook's hardly the only beneficiary of this new policy - this year's runner-up David Archuleta managed to place three songs of his own on the Hot 100!

Congrats to both the Davids - this is a truly amazing accomplishment!

Jeez - first Mariah comes gunning for the Fab Four's record for #1s, and now David's coming within a hair of this milestone!

Um ....what the beatles did - thru complete radio airplay domination...and "go to the store" and buy..sales is truly incredible...plus hold all the top 5.....Cook, is not heard on radio...no domination...and no "go to" sales...just pushbutton spur of the moment on a whim downloads ....BIG BiG difference and advantage to cook. Very stupid comparison....Mariah by the way also has benifeted the same in recent years,,,,,,wanna compare try apples to apples.

Actually Jim, the Hot 100 chart, since 1958, has been based on sales and airplay. Same at the moment. The fact that David Cook could place so many based mainly on sales (in fact 7 of the tracks were removed after the finale songs were released) makes it more impressive. I don't think it is apples vs. oranges. Plus all the itunes costs the same. Mariah got her advantage in the past by issuing deeply-discounted singles (prices way below the rest in the markets). You are actually the one that is comparing apples and oranges.

JP...what are you talking about...ALL of it is downloading almost NO airplay is involved "more impressive" how is that? My daughter had her I phone taken away last month for downloading 50 songs in 1 night from I tunes...she didnt even know half of them - this goes on all over the place....for 1 sale to occur in the past....first no real mass media....you had to garner a bunch of airplay...second you had to get in your car..on a bike...take a bus and but it...in person...that was "1" sale.....now you sit on the toilet and press a button and put it on your ipod with your one thousand other downloads..."um, how is that acheivement more impressive? M Cyriss had 6 at one time a while ago...you just think its a coincidence that all these records that have stood for over 45 years are suddenly being broke.....get smart....its not apples to apples...its wireless, downloading.

"Actually Jim, the Hot 100 chart, since 1958, has been based on sales and airplay. Same at the moment." This statement is NOT true. Billboard charts are now based on sales, airplay, and paid digital downloading which is by far the dominant factor. In 1964 digital downloading and the millions upon 10's of millions of Ipods and IPhones were not available nor factored in. To sat it was Not the same is a millions upon millions understatement!!

David Cook is the real deal.
America definitely got it right this year!

David Cook and David Archuleta both suck!

They record the worst music I have ever heard.

There is no way i would ever listen to that annoying shit.

These sales numbers are NOT impressive. Chalk it up to the excitement of the finale and the fact that most of the songs were going to be pulled from iTunes forever. It means squat. Wait 6, 7, or 8 months when he releases his album and then see how many albums he sells. By then the excitement will have died down and the novelty will have worn off. The numbers he produces after that will be more telling than these.

3:39 is correct - these numbers count for shit. Neither of these fools are going to do anything news worthy. I like Simon and the judges, but the talent is always lacking - Underwood and Hudson are cool. Romo should go back to Underwood

David Cook has the likeability factor and will go far. So will David A, he just has alittle maturing to do as of yet.
