Review: Spears falls off the tightrope
Theatrics dazzle but singer undone by emotionless lip-synching

The biggest spectacle to perhaps ever visit EnergySolutions Arena was Britney Spears' Circus Tour Tuesday in an imaginative, creative and titillating big-top show that, ultimately, failed to deliver an emotional connection with the audience.

Spears, the 27-year-old tabloid sensation who dominates magazine coverage with her controversial and mundane exploits, revealed nothing about herself other than a fit, toned body and long, flowing blonde locks. It was as if we were at a zoo looking at someone beyond the moat, unable to share in the musical experience as we were kept at a distance.
The pop singer, who has now performed in front of large audiences for more than a decade, appeared to lip-synch every song, except for the slow ballad "Everytime." During that song, in which she was perched on the crook handle of a giant umbrella suspended from the rafters, she illustrated her thin, breathy voice -- and it was the best musical moment of the night, because for one small moment, she resembled a human being with human emotions, as opposed to a robot going through the exhausting paces.

1:26 - if you seriously believe that only 2 or 3 people are here because they dislike Britney Spears than you are very much mistaken. I can guarantee you that the majority of people can't stand this loser more than people that like her. She is a poor excuse of a mother, daughter, sister, friend and wife. She is a pathetic entertainer who needs a lot of stuff going on around her to keep people from constantly looking at what a collassial failure she is. All you have to do is go on other websites, such as Dlisted, TMZ, etc and you will see that Britney is nothing but a joke.

With all that being said, the stage show was spellbinding, with Spears the ringmaster and the focus of attention despite what seemed to be hundreds of dancers, sideshow acts, clowns, trapeze artists and gyrating welders (don't ask). The concert was divided into four acts -- Circus, House of Fun, Freakshow/Peepshow and Electro Circ, capped with an encore of "Womanizer" -- and in each song, Spears wore a different costume and it was impossible to keep your eyes off of her, because you never knew what would happen next. In one of the more entertaining bits, she was sawed into threes and miraculously reappeared unharmed, and then performed a disappearing act in which she was invisibly transported from the center ring to another ring.

The set was a three-ring circus centered on the arena floor, and Spears did an admirable job of trying to entertain the near-sold-out crowd by projecting to the audience which surrounded her. A 360-degree video screen was displayed above the onstage action, and curtains, empty picture frames and cages were thoughtfully used to demonstrate how she both attracts and wants to repulse the voyeuristic eyes of the audience.

Music was a secondary afterthought. I believe I saw three musicians nestled in dark corners offstage, but I can't be sure. The tinny sound was heavy on treble and low on bass, revealing the acoustic weaknesses of the arena. And while Spears' mouth moved along to the recorded verses and choruses, it was hard to understand why someone like Ashlee Simpson can be vilified for lip-synching on a free episode on "Saturday Night Live" while Spears can charge $750 and be congratulated for doing the same thing.

It was almost as if Spears was embarrassed of her own music, as Marilyn Manson's version of "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" played during a video of an "Eyes Wide Shut" orgy. In the most egregious and inexplicable example, while Spears was offstage, 11 of her dancers were introduced to the crowd with each dancing to a different song not from Spears: Michael Jackson, Rihanna and Lil Wayne were all played. A montage of Spears' songs not performed would have been nice, since everything else was recorded anyway.

It was a show of sound and fury, signifying nothing. And I ended up feeling cold, and not just because I had to take a cold shower afterwards.

Britney was 40 minutes into her show in San Jose, California when she asked the audience: "What's up, Sacremento?" This wasn't the first time she has made georgraphical errors or verbal blunders.

People afraid of clowns should avoid Britney Spears' Circus Tour on Tuesday at EnergySolutions Arena. Menacing "sado-clowns," inspired by sadomasochism, are just some of the dancers/characters who will take the stage alongside Spears in a circus that definitely isn't Barnum & Bailey-issue.

Responsible for costuming the unique characters, as well as Spears, are the Canadian identical twins Dean and Dan Caten. Their design company, DSQUARED, has previously dressed Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, Beyoncé and Justin Timberlake for concert tours. "We've been hoping to work with [Spears] for some time," said Dan Caten in a Salt Lake Tribune interview.

Britney Spears performs in a ringmaster costume designed by DSQUARED. right up the Catens' back alley. The brothers have been known for their provocative ideas since their Milan debut in 1995, and said they were intrigued by the tour's concept of a circus. That theme is drawn from Spears' latest album, titled "Circus."

The title track includes such lines as:
All eyes on me in the center of the ring just like a circus When I crack that whip, everybody gonna trip just like a circus Don't stand there watching me, follow me, show me what you can do Everybody let go, we can make a dance floor just like a circus

"It is a sexualized modern circus," Caten said of the show. "We love contrast. It's taking a new light on a familiar thing."

Perhaps an expected strategy for the controversial singer, now 27, whose latest single, "If You Seek Amy," sounds like an expressionchise that can't be printed in a family newspaper. Setting aside tabloid escapades, that blurring of the line between innocence and decadence has been part of the singer's performing persona since her first video, "... Baby One More Time," was released in 1999. In the infamous video, the then-17-year-old bared her cleavage, midriff and pigtails in a schoolgirl's
uniform.

To design costumes for the tour, the Catens collected ideas from Spears, then added their own brainstorms and sketches to the mix. The first costume designed by DSQUARED is inspired by the idea of a seductive lion-tamer.

Caten said he wanted the costume to make Spears appear as the beast and the ringmaster simultaneously, so the brothers designed a red jacket with royal blue cuffs and gold braided details. They added flowing animal hair to the jacket's shoulders and topped everything off with a replica cheetah head adorned with black tulle and ostrich feathers.
When the outfit is completed with fishnets, lace-up boots and a whip, ringmaster Spears will be an antithesis of family-friendly Bello Nock, the head clown of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The sexual allure of the costume is important because it equates to showmanship, according to Caten.

Spears' second costume lies underneath her first and further transforms the singer. After peeling off her ringmaster costume, she reveals herself to be a sexy dominatrix. In a three-piece vixen corset and panty set enriched with Swarovski crystals and draped chiffon, she is thrown into a cage with muzzled, leather-clad sex slaves, a tableau that Caten labeled "erotic."

Those are just the first two costumes. Other characters through the show include the aforementioned "sado-clowns," Parisian balancing acts, "salacious centaurs" and "chiseled and chained Houdini men," according to the Catens.

One thing the designers had to keep in mind is that they were designing a stage show, not a runway show. The outfits Spears and her dancers wear use stretch fabric such as Lycra so that even in the most elaborate costumes, movement isn't hindered.

The overall effect, the designer said, is to take the audience out of the real world and catapult them into an alternate reality that's edgy and sensual. "We want people in the 200th row to get some impact," Caten said.

Britney's Ex Sued Over Car Attack

Britney Spears' ex BF Adnan Ghalib has been hit with a lawsuit over a hit and run.

Ram Moskowitz claims Ghalib maliciously struck him with a car, sending him flying onto the hood and then driving 30 - 40 yards before he was thrown clear -- this because Moskowitz was trying to serve Adnan with a restraining order on behalf of Britney.

It's the same incident for which Ghalib now faces 3 felony charges.

Ram suffered cuts, abrasions and a fractured wrist.

In his lawsuit filed Monday in L.A. County Superior court, Moskowitz seeks unspecified damages.

Angry fans say Britney Spears concert was Cirque du So Lame

VANCOUVER — Britney Spears fans have set up a website demanding a refund for her April 8 concert in Vancouver after the pop star walked off the stage for more than half an hour complaining of smoke.

Spears blamed "ventilation issues" brought on by smokers in the crowd for her decision to temporarily halt her glitzy comeback concert tour, Circus. The sold-out crowd of 18,000 was left to chant in the dark, repeatedly calling for Spears to reappear on stage.

The website claims some concert-goers left GM Place stadium after 20 minutes, thinking the concert had been cancelled.

An announcement was made shortly before 9 p.m. telling stunned concert-goers that "it's become uncomfortable and unsafe for the performers, including Ms. Spears." When the pop star did come back on stage, she proceeded with the show without offering an explanation to the crowd.

Angry fans, many of whom spent a lot of money on tickets and travel expenses to see the show, say they did not "receive due value for their investment" and want their money back.

Britney Spears seemed to have her life under control. All had been going well since she headed off on tour on 3 March under her dad Jamie’s watchful eye – until last week, when her panic attacks returned.

It’s the first sign that Britney is feeling the mental pressure of touring. Insiders tell Now that the major worry is that Britney’s anti-psychosis medication isn’t working.

Her psychologist and mental health team are working overtime to find the right medical balance before she goes completely off the rails. She’s also having more sessions with her therapist.

The panic attacks, which were under control, have increased to two a week. She’s also paranoid that everyone is out to ‘make a quick buck’ and that people see her as a ‘cash cow’.

Britney's Ex Adnan Sued Over Alleged Hit and Run

We're just waiting for the day to come that Adnan Ghalib will be relegated to the footnotes in Britney Spears' Wikipedia entry.

But the singer's paparazzo ex-paramour is not going quietly as his legal troubles stemming from his bizarro relationship with Spears keep mounting.

A process server has filed a lawsuit against Ghalib for the alleged hit-and-run that occurred in February as the former was trying to serve the latter with a restraining order on behalf of Spears' family.

The complaint, filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court by Ram Moskowitz, claims he was intentionlly hit by the 36-year-old Ghalib's car while waiting outside his Burbank apartment.

The process server suffered cuts, abrasions and a fractured wrist in the attack, but refused medical treatment when cops arrived.

Ghalib, who has since been barred from having any contact with Spears for three years, has pleaded not guilty to felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon, battery and hit-and-run. His next court date in the criminal case is scheduled for May 4.

Moskowitz's civil suit seeks unspecified damages, but if Ghalib, a native Britain originally from Afghanistan, winds up being deported, the process server might very end up with nada.

Except maybe a footnote in Ghalib's Wikipedia entry.

Woman Arrested for Peeping into Britney's House

A woman decked out in camouflage fatigues -- and carrying a backpack and video camera -- was arrested this morning for sneaking into Britney Spears' private Calabasas community and peering into the windows of her home.

The whole thing went down around 10:50 this morning when private security noticed 26-year-old Miranda Tozier-Robbins acting suspicious outside of the home. According to the incident report, security asked her to leave, but the woman "balked at their requests" and had to be physically escorted off the property.

Sheriffs arrived shortly after and took her to a local station where she was booked on charges of trespassing and disorderly conduct. Bail was set at $5,000, but she was released on a citation to appear in court on June 16.

We're told Britney was not home at the time, but she is in town this week -- playing the Staples Center in Los Angeles tonight and tomorrow.

Britney is just plain dumb, uneducated, stupid......well, you get the picture. Her parents didn't see to it that she got a good education. The hillbillies figured she didn't need one with all the millions she was making. Now they're just living off of her money and pimping her. If she's so "mentally ill," how come she can get up and do money-making concerts? I don't know why anyone would pay to see such a mediocre performer. I guess it's curiosity on their part. I saw her performances on You Tube, and she's no singer or dancer.......haha.
