Pop veterans Take That have slapped a custard pie straight in Britney Spears’ face.

Their albums – both called Circus – went head-to-head this week and so far Take That are making it look trap-easy.

The lads broke the record for first-day sales – shifting 133,000 copies – and are sitting pretty at No1 in the midweek charts.

Britney, meanwhile, is at No3 – and her disastrous X Factor mime act on Saturday would have done her few favours.

Gary Barlow and Howard Donald saw it, open-mouthed along with the rest of the nation, and have seized the chance to let her have both barrels.

Speaking at the international launch of their new album in Paris, Gary told us: “I don’t see the point of Britney anymore, she was rubbish on the show. I think she’s more famous than she deserves to be now.”

The week before Britney’s “silent night”, Take That performed live on the X Factor and Gary went on: “Why come on a show like that and mime? I don’t like her new song either. Her old stuff was great but maybe she should have spent more time on this one.”

He said: “The truth is all the contestants on X Factor are so talented and were able to sing and dance live, so why couldn’t Britney do it? It’s the whole point of the show and her miming looked stupid – I just don’t think she understood the show.

To show Britney how it’s done, the boys played a fantastic LIVE gig at Paris VIP Room on Monday night.

Britney is already falling off the charts with her new CD. The group called TAKE THAT is number 1 (#1) right now. They just sold 133,000 copies today (their first day just like Britney). Then there is another group that is number 2 on the charts and they sold 60,000 today. Britney is only number 3, and she has only sold about 30,000 the first day. The first day is always the heaviest for Brit since her fans all run out that day and buy 2 or 3 copies to push sales up for her. That sucks, and she is already dropping down. And no, she has not almost sold out her shows. I just checked, and there are tons of tickets left. So again, Britney fans have to lie in order to make her look like she is winning. She is not, she is already failing big time!

You have no proof that she is doing this tour to prove that she is sane and rational so she can get her kids back 50/50. In fact, this tour is going to drive her over the edge again and make her have another breakdown. You can see that she is already tired and not in to it when she has done her one song shows for the last week. She is already not doing well. So a tour for months to come, and for her to do 20 songs a night for two hours or so a night, is going to be too much. It will break her.

I would think that the courts and the judge would be far more interested in her staying home with her kids and acting sane as proof that she is fine and can have her kids back. A tour is not what is going to convince them. It is her being a mom and staying home with her kids that would do it. Getting her life under control instead of doing all the things, with all the pressure, that drove her crazy in the first place is what she should be doing.

I think she should go home and get her life, mind and kids in order, get out of the conservatorship and become sane first. Then she can maybe try for a comeback a few years from now. "Britney: For the Record" might offer an inside glimpse into the pop star's life, but offering up tidbits about her failed relationship with Kevin Federline wasn't the goal of the documentary.

"Despite all she's been through, she's a shrewd one, and so is her manager Larry Rudolph (who produced the documentary)," says a source close to Spears. "This documentary was as much about a pre-emptive strike about (her father's) conservatorship if it fails, and making Larry look good if she doesn't."

Explanation, please? "Everyone agrees that (father and current financial manager) Jamie's been good for Britney, but there's always the possibility that his best efforts won't work when it comes to letting her have the career she wants, and that shouldn't be pinned on Britney," the source says. "She can't make any decisions. If she fails, she doesn't want it to look like it was her fault."

As for Rudolph, the source says, "He made her who she is. He handled her brilliantly right after the she announced her split, but then she lost it, and that wasn't his fault. This will prove that. Larry needs Britney as much as she needs him."

Spears isn't trying. It's not that her team, led by her longtime handler Larry Rudolph, hasn't carried out a strict, carefully orchestrated comeback game plan.

You just can’t force the girl, a mother of two who today celebrates her 27th birthday and the launch of her new album, “Circus,” to want a comeback; even while the world seems eager for it (fans sent her single, “Womanizer,” to the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in its second week of release). Being back in the spotlight has worked its magic on her hair, her body and even her personal life.

But the fire in her eyes? And Britney's once consistent ability to turn it on when the curtain rises? That appears to be absent, at least at the moment. In its place we’ve got the former pop princess on autopilot, and it’s as devastating to watch as her 2007 MTV VMA performance of “Gimme More.”

First, there was this year’s VMAs.

MTV would support its onetime golden girl and present her with her first-ever "moonmen," including one for the ceremony’s top honor, video of the year. Spears’ appearance would also be decidedly low-key: no performance, just a taped sketch with Jonah Hill and her thank you speeches. Comedy is usually Spears’ strong suit no matter what insanity has gone on in her personal life -- just watch her past appearances on “SNL” and her more recent role on “How I Met Your Mother” -- but her bit with Hill fell flat.

Viewers stuck around to see what might happen. The awards show was watched by 8.4 million people, an increase of 19% from the year prior. Still, it was the first sign things weren’t quite back to normal.

Rolling Stone and Glamour landed the splashy profiles in which Spears agreed to participate. But the music mag, which in its February feature painted a portrait of an out-of-control starlet, also noted that while Spears was better, she was also flanked by her team at all hours, her time managed down to the minute. Glamour, in a more feel-good, hopeful piece, noted that Spears was “nervous” during the interview and that her energy level at the photo shoot went from “alert to lethargic.”

Sunday’s heavily hyped MTV documentary on the singer, “Britney: For the Record,” also made no attempt to hide the singer’s mood swings, One minute she was joking around, but for most of the program, she seemed lost in her own thoughts. She talked about wishing she could start over -- with, perhaps tellingly, a new life, not with a new career -- and at one point she broke down to her interviewer: “I’m sad,” she said, before letting the tears flow.

But, as usual with Spears, one strong performance could forgive everything. The music video for “Womanizer,” promoted and launched as an event in and of itself on “20/20” in October, made it seem like it could be possible too. There she was, dancing up a storm and rocking her newly reshaped bod.

Unfortunately, the same weekend “Britney: For the Record” aired, videos of Spears performing her single in Germany and on Britain’s "American Idol"-like “The X Factor” circulated online. All the moves were there, but the singer went through them as if she were counting down the seconds until she could run off stage. When the host of “X Factor” attempted to ask a few questions afterward, she gave polite but clipped responses. Did she have a good time? "Yes, awesome, thank you." Did she have any words of wisdom for the show's contestants? "Good luck and just keep doing it."
To cap the comeback media tour, ABC's "Good Morning America" erected a lavish circus tent with all the accoutrement for Spears’ appearance today (her first stateside performance of material from her new album), got celebrities including Hugh Jackman, Taylor Swift and Reese Witherspoon to tape birthday greetings, and presented her with a birthday cake that took 60 hours to make.

Spears performed two numbers with the same restraint she exercised in the events abroad. And afterward, when confronted with the enthusiasm of Diane Sawyer and Robin Roberts, she was politely flummoxed. “Thank you,” was all she kept repeating. Spears watchers were unimpressed.

Maybe things will change should “Circus” sell well. It won’t be tough to beat the disappointing sales for her last album, “Blackout.” Maybe she’ll take comfort in the cautiously optimistic reviews. Maybe when her tour launches in March, she’ll be entirely rehabilitated.

But for now, Spears’ comeback feels like one assigned to her. Should she decide she wants in, perhaps then the fireworks will follow.

I think you are very right. In California it is very, and I mean VERY hard to put someone under a c-ship. Courts will only do it after a lot of psychological tests and doctors have made it very clear the person has some major mental problems. And that they just can't take care of themselves to the point that it may kill them, or their life is in great danger if they are left alone. Basically they are mentally at the level of a kid or someone with real thinking problems. Yet here we see her "team" and dad putting her up for sexual sale, then pushing her to tour to make money for everyone. Britney can't dance anymore because of her two knee injuries she had. She hurt her knee in 1999 and had to have it operated on. Then she hurt the same knee badly in 2004 and had to have it operated on again (the same knee). If you look on some of the Britney fan sites, you can find high quality pictures of her knee. You can see some really big operation cuts on her knee, three of them, and they are two to three inches long.

And if you remember, the insurance companies would not cover for her when she had to cancel her Onyx tour in 2004. She then had to cover the cost of the cancelled tour herself.

Britney can't dance anymore because of her two knee injuries she had. She hurt her knee in 1999 and had to have it operated on. Then she hurt the same knee badly in 2004 and had to have it operated on again (the same knee). If you look on some of the Britney fan sites, you can find high quality pictures of her knee. You can see some really big operation cuts on her knee, three of them, and they are two to three inches long.

And if you remember, the insurance companies would not cover for her when she had to cancel her Onyx tour in 2004. She then had to cover the cost of the cancelled tour herself.
