Britney Spears' Childhood: An Addiction Specialist (Dr. Drew!) Explains How It Shaped Her Behavior Today

“She’s sort of our new Michael Jackson,” says Dr. Drew Pinsky as he talks about the traumas in Britney’s past — her father’s substance abuse, and a family history of mental imbalance — and how they may explain her current mental state

US: What in Britney Spears’ childhood led her to where she is now?

DP: It's how her father treated her, it's the divorce and it’s the genetics.

US: How would her father’s substance abuse affect Britney?

DP: At least 60% of addiction is accounted for on the basis of genetics. I've never treated an addict that didn't have a family history of the disease. You have to inherit it from somewhere. We know that she is a drug addict because she's been admitted to a treatment center. You can't be admitted unless you’ve met criteria for addiction.

US: A person can’t be accepted for post-partum depression?

DP: If you go to a psychiatric hospital for post-partum depression, you go to the psychiatric hospital, you don't go to the chemical dependency program. She is a drug addict. It is an indisputable point. And she has a parent with an addiction. Just by having a parent with addiction puts you at about a 50% risk for having your own addiction problem. But, just because you have a genetic heritage doesn't mean you're going to get an addiction. A childhood trauma, physical abuse, sexual abuse, abandonment, will also propel a person towards full-blown addiction.

US: What about the fact that she became an international star at such a young age?

DP: Her mental health has almost nothing to do with her career. Fame hinders getting to her now. It is hard to get through the sycophants who are enabling her and be able to find people around Britney who are willing to potentially sacrifice either their salary or their access to her by bringing her into treatment. That's the core problem. That is what is putting her in danger. That is what killed Anna Nicole Smith. She had people around her who didn't step up and say you need to get treatment!

US: We found out that her paternal grandmother committed suicide at the age of 31 because she was depressed for years after the death of her baby. Could that mean anything?

DP: It means that there is a long history of serious mental illness in the family. Britney is behaving very bizarrely, she has been admitted to a chemical dependency program, she has a stressful career, she's divorced, she has childcare demands, and she is in denial and is paranoid. She has a mom with the proxy relationship and a dad with drug addiction and alcohol problems. When you add that up you get the recipe for where she is today.

US: Is it her parents who should help her?

DP: Generally you want to bring the family in. You want to treat the family too. You want the family to support the recovery. You'll be amazed how people in the family start out looking like villains until you realize all the different layers to the situation. How the addict treats the family members can make people act in strange ways. I would urge everyone to not point fingers, there are no evil people here; they're all just trying to live their lives.

US: What about the effects from Britney being sexually active from age 14, dressing provocatively, losing her virginity, and yet maintaining this image of purity and virginity?

DP: I have seen many cases of young girls who have been prematurely sexualized in one fashion or another who try to recapture their virginity. They claim that the abuse doesn't count, "I'm a virgin now." I see that quite a bit.

US: Would this change her identity? She pretty much had to make those claims, because her managers were telling her not to talk about her boyfriend, all the while dressing her up provocatively for the public.

DP: Her life was a media event. Her needs were subjugated for her career and that is part of the problem here.

US: Court documents indicate that her father cheated on her mother and Britney allegedly cheated on Justin, did she learn that from her parents?

DP: It would be hard to learn to value sacredness in marriage with that as an example. But, if you want the moment in her life when it started to unravel, it was when she got involved with Kevin Federline. The crazy thing about the human is that traumatic experiences in childhood get repeated as attractions in our adult life. We are attracted romantically to that very kind of person that was so terrorizing to us in childhood. It's a crazy mechanism. So Dad and Kevin are the same guy.

US: She has said that all she wanted was to be a mother and be married. What happened?

DP: Those kinds of drives you can't be taught, you have to have a deep motivational desire. The problem was that the attraction that she was following was distorted by her childhood.

US: She has also said she wants to be a waitress or a school teacher. Would you send your kids to school where Britney Spears was the teacher?

DP: If she had been treated successfully first absolutely. You'd see a brand new person; she'd be incredible. But she needs a lot of treatment. She needs time, time, time and a high degree of structure. She is just not interested, people are trying to get her into treatment and she won't go.

US: One thing we’ve seen Britney is that she has arrested social development. Do you agree?

DP: She's sort of our next Michael Jackson. It's understandable that developmentally they don't have the usual skills. She doesn't have the usual responsibility; she doesn't understand the coping strategies of an adult.

US: And how is she going to teach her children? Or say no to them?

DP: She won't. It's grandiose thinking: “That's how I was raised and that is how my kids are going to be raised.” It's not a good thing.

US: What can be done for Britney? Is she permanently damaged?

DP: She can be treated. She is not an untreatable situation, but she needs to go away and drop out of sight and focus on her sobriety for at least nine months.

US: Can she leave her kids?

DP: The kids can be brought into the process. But, for at least 30 days she is going to be mostly away from the kids. Then, for another six months or so, she can be in an intensive environment. It's going to take a long time.

US: How much of this dysfunction did Britney create herself and how much of it is a product of her life and upbringing?

DP: Yes, the circumstances in her life and her genetics have contributed to where she is today. There was no sinister plot to make her this way. Now she needs to change and that is where you have to hold her accountable, particularly because she has children. An adult shouldn’t be blaming anyone other than themselves. She can get better, she just doesn’t want to.

Just one month ago, Britney fans were drying their mascara-stained cheeks: Blackout was hitting the shelves and it looked as though hope for our head-shaving, child-neglecting, drug addict pop tart was here in the form of 12 dirty dance tracks.

But it seems as though hope of a comeback has dried up completely like yesterday's double-whip frappucino. Blackout, as TMZ.com so succinctly put it, is "officially a total and utter flop." After a month -- and despite constant video rotation of Brit's dubious poll dancing "talents" -- a mere 430,000 copies of the record have been sold, and its status on the charts is shaky at best. As of Friday (Nov. 23) morning, ol' Brit was tucked away at the No. 23 spot on the Billboard 200. The record, her first since 2003's In The Zone, nose-dived from the No. 7 spot last week. On Amazon.com, Blackout is hidden at No. 59, but it clings to a modest No. 13 on iTunes.

The release of her new single, "Piece of Me," is failing to generate any new heat for the record, reports Fox News. The song is only at the 37th most downloadable single spot on iTunes.
Despite mixed reviews, Blackout made a semi-warm debut on the charts. Its first-day sales, according to Nielsen SoundScan, were 124,000 units, and Billboard had expected first-week sales to range between 330,000 - 350,000! but it did not do so, it only sold 290,000 units total, and many of those were multiple buys by her die-hard fans. Still, those numbers are nothing compared to Spears' "not so innocent" days. Her first two albums moved more than 20 million copies. Her last record of original material, In the Zone, which also sold a none-too-shabby 10 million-plus, managed to dwarf Blackout's total sales in its first week with 609,000 units sold. Looks like Britney’s career truly is over!

The people defending the sales, or lack of sales, come on CD's released after Blackout are doing very well even in the slower sales as you claim. If it were a fantastic CD and she has all the fans still, wouldn't you think it would have done much better in sales, no matter what. After all it was the first one out in several years. It just isn't what people had hoped it would be and had she promoted it, who knows, it may have done great. Why buy something the artist didn't even have an interest in?

The problem is that Britney is so crazy and unpredictable with her heavy drug and alcohol mood swings that no one trusts her anymore. She will end up costing any record company more money then she is worth in sales now. Her last CD (Blackout) only sold 290,000 in the first week compared to, In The Zone, that sold over 609,000 in its first day out. She has gone down so far in sales and has been such a problem to the record companies that she is over. She even sold less then the 350,000 Jive was hopping she would sell. And Jive said those were already low figures since they did not think she would sell much already because of her horrible image to the world for the last few years. And she was supposed to release this current CD (Blackout) over 2 1/2 years ago! They now don't want to put all that work in to her just to take another 4 or 5 years for her next one to be released. And they know a "next one" won't even sell as much as Blackout, which is already a low seller. JIVE even tried to move the date up so she would not be competing with anyone else like Celine Dion that she would have had to go up against if they had left it at the original date of release. And it still did not work for Britney. Every CD that she has released has sold half of the one before it in the same amount of time from their releases. BOMT sold around 11.5 million (USA) within the first few months of its release. OIDIA sold around 7.5 million in the same amount of time from its release. Her third one (Britney), sold around 3.5 million in the same amount of time from its release. And ITZ sold only 1.8 million in the same amount of time from its release. Now with Blackout, it's not even expected to sell a total of 1 million from the same amount of time from its release. She has had a straight downward trend in her CD sales. The image of her sweetness and how nice she was is what sold her at the beginning of her career since she looked like someone you would want to know. And no one knew she was a no talent at that time. But the world now knows that was just an image the industry created. It was NOT the real Britney. Now we see who she really is, a drug addict, alcoholic, child abuser, can't sing or write her own music, she is not a real artist and is not a real talent). That is why almost all her fans, the industry, and the world have turned away from her now. And her narcissistic ways and very selfish attitude is why she has sold less and less over the years. The public is now seeing what she really is and no one but a few aberrant and disgusting individuals like her now. And they have to buy multiple copies of her CD to try and push it up in sales. If Britney still had millions of fans, then she would have sold millions of CD's of Blackout. But she has only sold around 400,000 in over a month now, and many of those were bought by Jive to help her promote it by making it look like it was a hot seller (but even with their cheating, it still tanked big time). And then her fans bought multiple copies too, which is major cheating (and still it tanked). Britney does NOT have millions of fans anymore. She has just thousands now. She really is a loser and is comppletely over. Go home to your kids Britney, oh wait, she can't, they were taken away from her by the courts since she is an awful and abusive mother!

Britney does not have a string of #1 CD anymore. That is fair since she never was an artist and can’t sing, write, play an instrument, or do anything on her own as an artist. Britney is not #1. I checked the charts and she is not #1. Also, Britney is not feeling good and is not doing well at all. She has lost her babies, she is back on drugs, she is losing in court, she just got sued by someone else a couple days ago, and she usually loses her court cases (US magazine, NIKE shoes, her restaurant lawsuit (Nyla), and now with Kevin so far). She has major enablers and users around her that are taking her money day by day. Her whole life is in a really bad state. And she is in major pain. That is why she has been on drugs so heavily. It's to try and run away from the pain. The world hates her. All the media attack her. Her family is not around her much but are very upset at her. You don't see them with her much either. Her two best friends are Sam Lufti who is a user and is only going to take from her and turn on her, and Alli is also just with Britney and using her so she can try and start her own music career. Believe me, Britney is one of the most unhappy people out there right now and she is going through a living hell!

Also, this CD of hers (Blackout) is her lowest selling CD ever by far. Her last studio CD sold 609,000 copies in the first day of its release. And BOMT and OIDIA sold well over 1,000,000 copies on the first day of its release. But this CD (Blackout) only sold a total of 124,000 on the first day of its release. And now after more then a month, it has not even reached the 500,000 point. And it is the first week or two that sell the majority of a CD’s sales. After that it is all down hill. Industry annalists are saying it has already fallen off in sales badly, and is not even moving at all now. It will not even reach the 1,000,000 mark a year from now.

The reason Jive moved the date of release up to the 30 of October is because there would not be any competition with her sales. So they could try to get an easy #1, but did not. But years ago, Britney could have come out on the same day as Celin Dion, Christina, Alicia Keys, and many others and her CD would have outsold all of them by far. Now they have to release her CD's on a day and week when there is no competition so she can sell a low 124,000. That is really bad, especially for Britney when you look at her past records. But that was not Britney then either, was it. It was the industry that did it all for Britney since she is NOT a real artist and can’t do any of that herself!

Also, most of those supposed #1 you are talking about are on iTunes. It was released to the public shortly after that JIVE bought over $100,000 worth of those iTunes downloads as promotion to make it look like Britney was doing better then she really was. Then Jive did the same in those other countries too. It is easy to manipulate those statistics (the chart positions). But when you look at the actual CD sales (which is what really counts), well that tells it all. She is doing really badly. If Britney had millions of fans still, then she would have sold millions of CD’s by now, but she has not! This is also her last contracted studio CD with Jive (she had a five studio CD contract with them). She has been such a major problem to them by not touring, or doing any promo, or keeping her life together etc., that they are now going to drop her soon. So Britney is doing very badly and is not happy at all. I actually feel sorry for her, almost, lol.

Britney sold 609,000 CD's of "In The Zone" on the first day of it's release (US), and far more with BMOT, and OIDIA. But on the first day of Blackout's release it only sold 145,000. And now it is dropping off fast in sales already just a little over two days after it's release. Those are really bad numbers for her. And the industry is predicting that it won't even reach the million mark a year from now. It’s her worst sales figure for any CD she has put out by far. It won't even reach Platinum Status, so get your facts straight; Britney IS doing really poorly. And Jive is dropping her soon, this is the last of her five studio contracted CD’s they were obligated to make with her.

Her fans posts are dwindling daily. Most are from other countries or about 12 years old and all they can say is "luv u Brit", "leave her alone", or "Blackout is #1!" (even though it never was). My favorite Britney fanatic saying is "This is all Kevin's fault!"

I think public opinion is strongly against Britney Spears and even some of her staunchest fans are backing off because her actions are unexplainable and crazier by the minute.

For one, she has not been to China at all. You think she could go to China and no one would notice? You have to go there several times to finalize an adoption. You can't do that via text. For another, the laws in China are much stricter than in third world countries and even those are strict and lastly, her background check would stop any adoption proceedings in their tracks.
