Divided into four acts and an encore, the 90-minute spectacle, filled with dancers, tumblers, clowns and quite a bit of pyrotechnics, amounts to little more than a revenge fantasy against anyone who has wronged her -- a list, one imagines, to be quite long.

A court just ruled again that she isn't even competent enough to testify in a case she foolishly created. So much for all the crap about her being even partially functional again! Daddy better grab that leash and hang on to it!

For a start, Perez Hilton, who has long antagonized Spears, shows up here as an impotent queen introducing the star, only to be shot for his troubles. "There are two kinds of people in the world," she sings in the show's title song (and opening number), "the ones that entertain and the ones that observe."

Spears leaves no doubt who is who, as the song's chorus demands, "All eyes on me in the center of the ring/when I crack the whip, everyone's gon' trip." But she ends up in a cage, rolled around the stage, singing, "You want a piece of me," which, in this context, come off as less barroom braggadocio than a fact of her life.

For the rest of the evening, Britney is either the seductress or the put-upon. She wants to be the center of attention but doesn't want anyone to look at her. Given the star's conflicted relationship with fame, her uninspired performance may just be part of the plot. With the exception of "Everytime," a truncated ballad, she mimes to recorded vocals. Her dancing mostly consists of stamping her feet and flailing her arms (a favorite move is pounding her chest and flinging her arms out, a feckless display of dismissive power) while her troupe of dancers (which includes members of Big Apple Circus, who had a half-hour set immediately before Spears) surrounds her with Fosse-styled tableaux.

Given how little performing is involved, the Circus tour is not much more than a highly staged (tech credits are first rate) set of personal appearances, only without her having to sign autographs or come into direct contact with her fans. Given the antipathy on display, that probably suits Spears just fine.

Most cultures bury their dead, but here, we lavish them with hordes of backup dancers, expensive stylists and the best Swedish pop hits money can buy just to prop them up on a stage and watch them entertain us. So it goes with Britney Spears, who, despite all outward signs of being unable to count to 11, much less headline a big-budget revue, has been getting dragged around the country for the past two months to promote her sixth album, "Circus."

Then again, whoever is in charge of Spears' affairs these days has gone to great lengths to make sure people actually pay very little attention to Spears.

At her sold-out concert at Oakland's Oracle Arena on Wednesday, the beleaguered 27-year-old tabloid pet was the least interesting part of the show - a wobbly figure making very little effort to lip-sync along to the mediocre songs from her most recent releases while all around her acrobats, clowns, contortionists and magicians offered a dramatic re-enactment of a real big-top spectacular.

Spears never fully recovered from the upheavals that sidelined her career a few years ago - from stealing backup dancer Kevin Federline from his then-pregnant wife and shedding tears on cue for Matt Lauer, to her pantyless late-night Hollywood excursions, head shaving, the use of one of her kids as a steering wheel, and on and on. She may have made a decent album, but on Wednesday, it was hard not to look past the gleaming blond extensions and meticulous dance routines to see the same broken, bald-headed girl that just two years ago was smashing car windows with an umbrella.

Part of the reason people shelled out the big bucks for the concert probably had to do with wanting something to go wrong, like in Vancouver, where Spears inexplicably walked off the stage after only three songs, or in San Jose, where the star welcomed the audience with, "What's up, Sacramento?"

But Spears notwithstanding, the tour itself is almost flawless, with a great sound system and dazzling video effects. The set list, however, which leaned heavily on tracks from "Circus" and its predecessor, "Blackout," offered just a few musical highlights, such as latter-day hits "If U Seek Amy," "Womanizer" and "Toxic."

The only glance back at Spears' glory years was served up in a remixed version of her first hit, "... Baby One More Time." Even that was a extravagance, considering that during the 90-minute set, Spears spent nearly as much time off the stage as she did on it, letting the circus acts carry most of the show.

The capacity crowd - the female to male ratio was roughly 100 to one - didn't seem to care, cheering wilding every time a backup dancer did a flip or a metal shop worker made sparks fly - don't ask. They even applauded the awkward mid-concert advertisement for a mobile phone carrier.

So there's the upside. While Spears may have lost her children, sanity and personal freedom - her father, Jamie Spears, was granted legal conservatorship over her last year - she still has a thriving career.

But as much as you want to join the masses and root her on for the bad lip-synching, it's hard to put aside the feeling that Spears shouldn't be paraded around like this just to make everyone involved a tidy profit, that maybe she would be better off at home with her two boys, eating a bowl of cereal and watching "The Princess Diaries."

The San Francisco Chronicle’s review is a career obituary - from the opening to closing paragraph.

Can we even call it a comeback? Was she ever really gone? The Britney Spears brand was out in full force at the princess of pop’s Circus tour stop April 9 at the Tacoma Dome in Washington.

The audience: Mostly 20-something girls, including me.

The show: Sexy, flirty, fun.

The voice: Hardly audible over a loud vocal backing track.

The dances: Provocative and a good distraction from the lacking vocals.

After a highly publicized divorce from K. Fed., poor performance at the 2007 Video Music Awards and constant legal battle over her two children, Britney’s first tour in five years was truly a circus – complete with jugglers, acrobats, dancers, confetti and fire.

But, that’s what makes her concerts, and career, so entertaining – the smoke and mirrors.

My younger sister, Alicia, and I have seen Britney live half a dozen times, the first time at the Washington County Fair in Hillsboro – at the time, the furthest I’d ever driven with my first driver’s license. Britney sang and danced her heart out. The stage was simple. The crowd was genuine. And she told funny stories between songs.

Then there were all the bigger Rose Garden shows with less soaring vocals and more elaborate stage set-ups and audience interaction.

But her latest Circus tour has me wondering if Miss Spears became a robot. Every dance step and note delivered from the circular stage in the center of the arena seemed formulated. But was it a colossal disappointment or was she just going for a new style, more of a Cirque du Soleil format rather than focusing on her vocal warm-ups backstage?

I’ve realized Britney’s legacy is as an entertainer, not a singer. America has accepted that. When she declared she’s “not that innocent,” we accepted. When she attacked paparazzi with an umbrella and shaved her head, we still bought her albums. She seems fascinating, or just a safe topic at cocktail parties.

As if her day-to-day antics aren’t enough, Britney’s million dollar stage shows are mesmerizing – glitzy costumes, pyrotechnics, and infectious dance moves. But this show didn’t blow me away for two reasons:

1. The screen above the stage never showed a close-up. If our seats had been any further away we wouldn’t have been able to see a thing. Usually at arena events, a screen above the stage shows the people in the “cheap seats” what’s happening by – oh, let’s say – a close up of their face.

2. I also wish Britney would have interacted with the audience more. She sang, she danced, she changed dominatrix outfits, but I didn’t feel like she connected with the crowd like she used to. I didn’t feel like she was singing to me. She always has in the past.

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t like Britney. She’s the reason my friend Taylor and I visited tanning beds and started hip-hop dance classes in high school. She’s also the reason we stopped.

Toward the end of the Circus, a video montage played above the stage with snippets from 10 years of Britney music videos. It was like a time machine. My sister and I just stared at it. We have grown up with Britney. Everyone there had. But no one had outgrown her.

She’s always pushed the limits, brought us into her life – whether we were invited or not, and always put on a concert spectacle that deems her worthy of the princess of pop title.

The girl has had her fair share of public “oops, she did it again” moments and I see why parents question her as a role model. But, there’s something about Britney. Why else would thousands of hard-working Americans attend a concert where the singer doesn’t sing?

It’s like her lyrics state: “There’s only two types of people in the world / ones that entertain and the ones that observe / well, baby I’m a put-on-a-show kind of girl / Don’t like the backseat / Gotta be first.”

We accept, the good and the bad. America roots for Britney – the underdog and the superstar.

In Tacoma last week – and for the final song, dressed as a promiscuous police officer – Britney laid down the law, best she could.

It’ like the crowd was saying, “gimme, gimme more.”

The reviews are not "fake." I read the San Francisco Chronicle review, and it's true. No one is impressed with Britney's shabby, mediocre "performances." She has so much back-up and help, as usual, that if the show depended on her, the customers would demand their money back.

If Slutney is really "mentally ill" (I think she's just stupid and without morals) and has to be on medication that makes her zoned out, how on earth is she supposed to be a good entertainer?

I saw her performance on You Tube, and it was boring. I think people just go to see her because she's weird. I wouldn't waste my money.
