She continued to thumb her nose at the court procedings and and only had visitation. Then she lost custody of her children because of two mental breakdowns. Obviously in no condition to care for her kids. The real irony is that Britney paid her lawyers about at least $150,000 more and isn't allowed to visit her kids. Ok....as a lawyer (myself) I never blog. My daughter loves this Britney Drama stuff. I am sick to think that Kaplan is getting away with charging such fees. It's about time Kevin spent some money of his own. A little leagal birdy of mine informed me that there are buzzings going around about Kevin and Kaplan being in on a pay deal together. So we just read the order forcing Britney to pay $375,000 for K-Daddy's legal bill. Here's what jumped out at us.
In the order issued by Commish Scott Gordon, he notes that disso queen Laura Wasser charged Brit $164,972 in legal fees. Remember, Wasser handled the case for 10 months. She's the one who handled the divorce and fought for joint custody and dealt with Brit during the meltdown.
After Wasser quit, Brit hired Trope and Trope to rep her. On Trope's watch, Brit lost custody and visitation. Their bill for five months? $685,985.22 (the 22 cents is a killer). In fairness, Brit's craziness made it impossible for the Commish to do anything but strip her of custody. But seriously, $685,985.22???!!!

I think it's appropriate that Britney is being made to pay all of the attorney fees. She may have a mental illness, personality disorder, or emotional disorder, but from what I've read, she's responsible for this whole legal fiasco. It's good that her family are playing a big and active role in attempting to steer Britney onto a positive path, but I also believe that it's important that she be held accountable for her actions. Britney chose to be a difficult client, not respect court orders, and publicly behave in ways that were detrimental both to herself and her children. Kevin appears to be a good and responsible parent at least publicly I've not seen anything to suggest the contrary. He deserves primary custody of those children and to have Britney pay his attorney fees IMO. I hope it's true that Jamie Spears and Kevin have a good relationship that will hopefully lead to less court intervention in this matter. I hope Britney is as dedicated to improving her life as those who are genuinely trying to help her.

As an attorney myself, I find your spelling horrifying and only hope it's because you aren't working right now.

I find it rather curious that you are questioning these fees. This is an EXTREMELY high profile case. These attorneys are charging between $ 600-800 per hour. Take into account all the times that Britney has blown off depositions, requested court hearings and failed to show up, etc.

Furthermore, take into account the what has been going on VERY PUBLICALLY with Brit, thus leading to MORE prep time, the discrepancies between their incomes and there is little question of how the bill has gotten so high and WHY Britney is responsible for paying it. Actually, Brit is lucky Kevin hasn't requested alimony (if he's entitled - I don't know the specifics of the pre-nup).

Maybe if she gets her act together and behaves, they can come to an agreement and avoid further attorney's fees in the future. Time will tell.

The answer is already here, but ok.

First, it has been reported that this was part of their divorce settlement. Their is a HUGE discrepancy between their incomes. This isn't simply because Brit is a celebrity. This is normal when one person makes signficantly more money than the other person.

Second - look at all the times that Brit has skipped hearings (esp. ones she REQUESTED), skipped depositions, etc. Lawyers have to spend HOURS preparing for these things. Lawyers, despite what the public may think are NOT playthings. That is how Brit treated them.

She can't be allowed to just treat people that way and not be held accounted. I for one am GLAD the judge is making her see that she has consequences for her actions! Yes, with Jamie's guidance she "appears" to be cleaning up her act... and I HOPE for her children's sake it is not an act. However, without being held accountable, she'll never learn a thing!

Also, Britney, with her OWN lawyer would have signed an attorney-client fee agreement. Therefore, she would know exactly what she would be being billed for.

Now, that is not to say that I don't think any of these attorneys are inflating their bills. I DO. Today, Kaplan's bill was lowered by approximately 25% (from nearly 1/2 a million to $325,00 - if the reports are accurate). We'll see if the conservators do anything with HER attorney's bills.

If Britney is really getting better, taking responsibility for her past actions is a step in the right direction!

It happened after she left rehab ADA & tried to see the boys at Kevin's house. He refused to let her see the kids until she got her butt back to rehab & straightened herself out.

She was in a snit - they must have had a huge argument on the phone. She then shaved her head & (I can't remember who was with her - maybe Alli?) - they stopped at a gas station.

X17 had tailed her. Britney was in the front seat & at first was steamed but quiet about them snapping pics. Chucky, it was obnoxious - the video is probably on You Tube. It was like constant strobe lights. Britney asked them to please stop several times. It was obvious she was really upset. They wouldn't quit. Just wouldn't quit. she finally lost it.

People do NOT just get "stripped" of their parental rights! That would totally let them off the hook of paying child support. That's probably true. Many times, there are orders in place that drop offs and pick ups take place at "neutral" places so the parents are not able to argue in front of the kids. Let's face it - most parents don't HAVE bodyguards to do the driving for them! ; )

It is NEVER good for kids to see their parents arguing. If there is a way to avoid it, that's ALWAYS best.

Who knows, there may even be orders in place that a bodyguard or a 3rd party is to do the transporting of the kids. I think it is probably best Kevin and Brit aren't together in front of the kids. At least before she was under Jamie's care. She wasn't really the most "stable" person in the world - was she?
