Ellen Speaks Out On Gay Marriage Defeat

EllenPortia.jpg
Needless to say, Ellen isn't nearly as happy as when we spotted her and Portia the day after getting married. And now she's speaking out about the passage of California's Proposition 8.

The measure which takes away the rights of gays and lesbians to get married passed by a small margin.

Here's what Ellen had to say:

"Watching the returns on election night was an amazing experience. Barack Obama is our new president. Change is here. I, like millions of Americans, felt like we had taken a giant step towards equality. We were watching history.
"This morning, when it was clear that Proposition 8 had passed in California, I can’t explain the feeling I had. I was saddened beyond belief. Here we just had a giant step towards equality and then on the very next day, we took a giant step away.
"I believe one day a 'ban on gay marriage' will sound totally ridiculous. In the meantime, I will continue to speak out for equality for all of us."

Ellen isn't the only one expressing outrage. Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of West Hollywood last night carrying signs demanding equality.

We were pretty disappointed that a slim majority of California's voted to take away people's rights.

The people have spoken, but the celebrities will think that they are above what democracy wants.

I am with you, Ellen. I am a Republican, voted for McCain (for a variety of his policies vs. Obama). But, one I don't agree with the Republican party is on the right for gays to marry if they choose to. It does nothing to diminish the marriages of hetrosexual couples and everyone should have the right to fulfill their lives as they wish to personally.

I'm not gay or anything, but damnit! This sucks!
Gays should be able to get married too. :(

Posted by: Upset heterosexual woman!

It's makes me sick to my stomach that they passed prop 8. Especially at the fact that majority of all blacks voted for "CHANGE" yet they voted to still discriminate against gays. It's totall hypocrisy!!! WHEN WILL DISCRIMINATIONS STOP?!?!?!?!?!?!

Posted by: Angie

Totally agree 3:32

The news showed over 80% of black voters voted to ban gay marriage! They should know how it is to be discriminated against. Yet, they are doing it to the gay community

Posted by: Kelly

The definition of the word "marriage" is the legal union of a man and woman as husband and wife.
Not a man and a man, a woman and a woman, or a dog and a cat.
I am not against a CIVIL UNION, but it is not a marriage and should not be called one. Make up a new word for it !

Posted by: Democracy

You know this is a democratic society. The people of CA have spoken by the major population of that state voting for the ban and the gay community needs to accept it. A new president was selected in the same fashion--by the majority of the us population and the electorial college--get over it.

Posted by: Stop discrimination

Kelly
How many people do you know that honor their marriage? It's bull crap!

Posted by: Kelly

What has that got to do with it, stop discrimination ?
I am not against Gays doing whatever they please. All I said was that it is NOT a marriage. Look it up in the dictionary.
You can't call a dog a cat just because you feel like it.

Posted by: Anonymous

And Obama is just as much WHITE as he is black. So he is NOT the first black president.
First half white or first half black.
But NOT the first black president !

Posted by: Anonymous

3:24 and 3:47
Marriage is a LEGAL status which has rights and responsibilities and recognized across cultures, religions, and countries.
A Civil Union is NOT a Marriage because it is recognized ONLY at the STATE level and only in states that have this existing law-Vermont, Connecticut, New Jersey; California and Oregon have Domestic Partnership.

I'm not gay or know anyone who is personally but I want equally for all.

Posted by: James

Equality for all. I agree.
But no matter how much you want a union between same sex couples to be called "marriage", it is NOT !
You need to look it up, moron.
Make up a new word for it.
You are missing the point here.
The definition of the word "marriage" is the legal union of a man and woman as husband and wife.
NOTHING ELSE.
Let the Gays call whatever they want to call what they want to do, but it is NOT a marriage ! Call it Sniggles for all I care.
Like someone else said, you can't call a dog a cat just because you want to!

Posted by: Lawyer

YOU are not getting point...if you call it something else. They will not be legally protected in other states or countries.

Posted by: Anonymous

You are harping "Separate but Equal" like back in the '60s with Jim Crow Laws. NOT equal back then and not now.
So gays are "given" only 5 states out of 50 (not counting countries) they can live in and have true freedom?

Posted by: Anonymous

How dare you compare Jim Crow Laws to people not being allowed to marry!

Posted by: Anonymous

I'm tired of explaining things to intellectually-challenged people on this site.
I can only hope to inform some.

If you don't see the analogy, you're an idiot.

Posted by: and that's baaaaaad!!!

They should be happy with those 5 out of 50 states. Those of us that want to marry our goats don't even have 1 state.

Posted by: Anonymous

Like African-Americans should have been happy with the back of the bus.
Also, the slippery slope argument is always from a fearful heart...

Posted by: Anonymous

YEAH for prop 8!!! The people have spoken!!! Too bad Ellen thinks her celebrity voice should matter more than the general public!!!

Posted by: Cox

The people have spoken? well the people spoke to about slaves and guess what? if we listened to "the people" I could own a black person today because they would be slaves. The majority cannot decide on the minority. It's discrimination and it's wrong, period. It will be overturned anyway so homophobes, don't be so happy. Peace :)

beying gay/lesbo is not normal.. It's an abberation. you all guys that are not straight are freaks of nature... you are not to blame... but dont expect other peeps to piss themselves with joy when you try to make it appear as if you are just like everyone else.. cause no matter what this liberal crap has to say about equality any normal human being with the right set of morals and the right upbringing will alwasy feel that you are just not right.. there is not need to say it, and you have a right to have your decent living but legitimizing gay marriage is way going overboard... you waana live togther, do it, but the church will never embrace you, neither will God

Posted by: Anonymous

Stupid to speak about discrimination when we put black people in slavery, in saying that, gay should get married. i'm living in dublin ireland. and white irish voted against gay marriage and abortion. stop this colour noosense.i'm white too but i'm suprised at some white people moaning and being cry babies. we're not put into slavery like we did to blacks and yet we cry and moan for one black person being president, shows that us white people can't take a taste of our own medecine. even if it's just elections and not slavery! grow up

Posted by: Anonymous

obama didn't say anything about gay not getting married, plus it has nothing to do with being white or blacks. i have many black gay friends, another thing obama is president in january. now it's still bush so deal with bush, or better yet it's THE CHURCH that's against gay marriages. Take your anger on them, i'm also an irish white person who's gay, the church in ireland is against gays and abortion and that has been the law. so it's illegal in ireland and they were ALL WHITE PEOPLE WHO BROUGHT THAT LAW!! i was in south africa where gay people are almost everywhere and are accepted, and the majority of people is blacks. so stop this colour nonsense, anything good or bad can happen in both white or black society!

Posted by: Anonymous

the CHANGE that blacks and whites who voted for obama was about, economy, no more wars. on more political issues.plus it's the CHURCH that has and is always opposing issues like gay marriages. another thing obama is not yet president, bush made a big mess and whoever was going to be president must CHANGE that. because the markets are bad, the economy terrible, the war is still on even if they don't talk about it much, our troops are being killed and saddam was not responsable for 9/11. while bin ladden is still around, so all this need to be CHANGED. don't mix issues out of anger.

Posted by: Anonymous

people need to educate yourselves on politics, not just aamerican politics. because the truth is the Church has more power. presidents of big powers are not really the ones taking decisions, plus all these countries need each other. don't be fooled by thinking that we're powerful only by ourselves, noo way read more. plus people here are right by saying it's the church that decides on things like that. as long as the church is there and still making decisions for world leaders, issues like gay marriages will always have problems to overcome. it's not a question of colours. educate yourselves more, knowledge is power!!

WONDERFUL news about the proposition passing! I was thrilled to hear that decency and clean living is trying to make a comeback. These grotesque h.o.m.o.s need to crawl back into their filthy closets. Did anyone really think that two men inserting things where they defecate and women using whatever they can find (sticks, bottles etc) to insert into each other can be called "s.e.x"? Whatever! Loving, natural heterosexual couples come out on top, AGAIN! The best news EVER!!!!!

12:38, Obama is not black. Never was. He's half-white, bi-racial but NOT black. The people who keep saying this look about as foolish as people who use the term "African-American". Placating people based on their color is embarrassing but Obama is FAR from black. WE did not put anyone into slavery. People did WELL over a hundred years ago and their OWN PEOPLE in Africa eagerly found them and sold them into slavery so don't even go there.

Posted by: Anonymous

Yes we did put people into slavery, didn't you do history at school. did african americans ancestors just landed in america??, it is in all the history books. they put in chains to work in fields and so on..what planet are you on. obama is half black and half white true. which is a good thing because he knows about both races. my own child is bi.

Posted by: Anonymous

5:03 calm down, it's good point you're making about him being half this and that. it is in fact whites who keep moaning and being cry babies about his race. again about him being bi-racial and son (because i'm one too), still whites were putting us bi and "100%" in the same race and discriminating against us back in racist day. i'm proud to be called blak, because we bis and blacks were in same situations, stood by each othe's side. in time of malcomx who was bi, martin luther king..whites didn't!

Posted by: bi racial person!

wow i'm a bi-racial person too, so now some people are trying the "oh he's not really black". first you attacked as being a terrorist and all the nonsense, so now he's not "really black". i call myself black, plus obama is his black father's name. not only is his father black, but a true african :-)) i like that one in particular. but in saying that, it's a good thing, we're all human and equal. i just had to say all of the above since, like the person before me said. whites classified all of us being colored people, there's nothing wrong with being, white, black, yellow and red... we're all made by God. and true, african were brought here by force, to be slaves. they didn't have boats and all stuff europeans had to travel, next thing you're going to say is "martin luther and malcom x are a myth" . time to stop this nonsense and work together.

Posted by: Anonymous

I think that people are again just trying to make black people feel bad, since he's bi they're really trying to say that it's " his white side that made it and blacks can't do anything attitude". i'm bi too, why can people just let it go, grow up and act mature. past presidents were whites, still all colours voted, like my mum who's black she voted for many of those whites presidents and the ones she didn't vote for when they won, there was the "didn't like him but better luck next time". but for obama some people are trying all tricks and accusations just to hurt others.

Posted by: Anonymous

you the world is praising us right now, saying things like we're showing them how we accept all colours and so on. my message is stop fighting, and let really show that we're a great nation.

Posted by: Anonymous

6:24 well said as a biracial person, now you're trying the half thing? LOL i can't believe it, yeah right like in the 30's and slavery time you didn't know that. besides all people of all colour want is to be treated equally, furthermore our "black" side stood by us all the way. and now you want to take the credit, anyway there should not be any discrimination of any kind in the first place.

Posted by: Anonymous

black people didn't vote against gay marriage, jeez. people stop with the race thing, the catholic church is against gay marriage, plus a few other churches. they've done this for years and most of them are whites. even the pope is against it, why don't you blame them. ireland is against gays, abortions it's been like that for years there. so they irish are blacks??, we should stop now with this now. what's done is obama is president, for people who keep saying no we're not racist we seem to go on this and moan about it. when us, whites were being presidents that was ok. one president of different race we go on like sulking babies. other races had to deeal with slavery and more, but just once a president of a difference race and some people go on as if there was never a white president!!! grow up!!

Posted by: Anonymous

first of all, it's a true statistic that most black people in California did vote against gay marriage. second of all, the major reasons that people use to belittle gay marriage are all from the bible. you know, there's a pretty important document in America called the Constitution, which calls for the separation of church and state. so for anyone who says that gay marriage is against the law, you're acting even more against the law by bringing religion into this. in ancient rome, gay men were respected even more so than straight men. then, when the christians took over, it was said to be wrong. now people are finally coming out again after thousands of years of oppression, and you're not going to keep any of them back. If gay marriage had not been put down by the catholic church, it would always have been a union equal to those of a man and woman and gay marriage would not be "weird" at all. i'm sorry you all are brainwashed by religion.
