Farrah Helped Nab Hospital Worker That Leaked Medical Info

FarrahUCLA200.jpgFarrah Fawcett says a real-life sting operation helped identify the UCLA hospital worker who was selling her private medical information to The National Enquirer.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Fawcett lashes out at the hospital for failing to protect her privacy and claims UCLA repeatedly pressured her to donate money for the creation of a foundation in her name.

Fawcett said the leak of information about her treatment for anal cancer made the process even more difficult.

"People call, 'How are you?' 'How do you feel?' 'We're praying for you.' Do you still have your hair?' ... When every single call is that kind of call ... it's all you talk about. It's all-consuming. Then, your quality of life is never the same," Fawcett told the paper.

Farrah says she was "never more sure of anything in [her] life" that somehow information about her illness was being leaked from UCLA. So when doctors discovered that her cancer had returned, she decided to keep the information from her friends and family.

Fawcett had the proof she was looking for when the news appeared in the Enquirer four days later. It was later discovered that an administrative worker had been selling the information to the Enquirer. UCLA says it has changed the way it handles private patient information and new laws have been passed to protect patients.

The public's facination with the story is understandable. "Particularly when it's something sexy or scandalous, or on the negative side, something kind of tragic and sad, for whatever reason, the public is interested in those types of stories," said X17online's own Brandy Navarre.

"I think it's really just an American icon and the public's love of this woman and the nostalgia and everything around her," Navarre said.

Meantime, the Charlie's Angels star's condition continues to deteriorate. Ryan O'Neal told People Magazine the cancer has spread to Farrah's liver, she's bedridden and has lost of all of her hair.

As much as my heart goes out to Farrah and her battle with cancer, surely celebrities must realize that when you are famous, people want to know things about you. Why is it a different story when a celeb has a new movie coming out or will be attending a certain event and they contact the media to alert them, then get upset when the same media report things about them and their lives. In Farrah's case, I believe that her fans are genuinely concerned and want to know how she is doing. Without fans, celebrities wouldnt be celebrities- they need to remember that.

Hospital Worker Who Sold Out Celebs Dies
Posted May 9th 2009 7:30AM by TMZ Staff

Bizzare twist in the case of the hospital worker who sold medical records of Britney Spears and Farah Fawcett to the tabloids ... she has died.

Lawanda Jackson pled guilty in December to violating the federal medical privacy law. She was scheduled to be sentenced on Monday, but her lawyer notified the judge that his client died from breast cancer on March 24.

Jackson had worked for the hospital for 32 years before her arrest.

UCLA staff have been involved in widespread HIPAA violations for at least a decade including medical treatment that occurred before/after Britney’s 5150/5250 and Farrah’s cancer diagnosis and treatment. Some of you have an inexplicable devotion to a celebrity and insatiable appetite to know everything about them. If your favorite publication traffics in confidential medical information, please reconsider your purchase.

Boy howdy, do celebrities have a right to privacy? How do you even ask that question? Why are you such repulsive morally bankrupt people that you think that's a fucking question? Pretty much everyone has a right to medical privacy. Hopefully not non-humans like everyone who works at x17, but sadly, I think so.

3:58 I agree their question was absurd but this story involves more than one celebrity, one UCLA employee and one blog. The market for stolen medical records is expansive. There is a criminal investigation into UCLA involving over 120 employees who illegally accessed medical records (see the new Britney thread). HIPAA medical privacy laws cover every U.S. citizen without exception. Elected officials such as the U.S. President and Vice President waive their rights and authorize their physicians to release medical summaries because of national security concerns.

Your medical info is private and the paps pay alot of money for that personal info they have no right to have. Laws need to be passed.

We all love Farrah, but any actor/actress has to accept the understanding that EVERYTHING in there life will be public, good and bad, but especially the bad. You can not, as an actor, expect to exploit everything in your life for the good and not have the bad things in your life exploited. You know this going in, that as an actor/actress this will be the case. It just seems to slip the mind of those actors/actresses when something like this happens.

Everyone has the right to privacy at certain times in their lives, if you don't think so, think of yourself in a similar situation and see how draining someone always popping up in your face day or night, leaving you no time for yourself at all and think of how you'd feel! Its terrible, if it were possible people would want to have a camera in the bathroom while an entertainer, etc was using the toilet!!!!!!
