Slumdog Millionaire & 30 Rock Sweep the Golden Globes!

Golden Globes slumdog.jpgIndian drama Slumdog Millionaire swept the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards tonight, picking up Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Director for the film's Danny Boyle, Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score.

The film tells the story of a poor Indian teen who becomes a contestant on the Hindi version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, wins, and is then suspected of cheating.

The film recently picked up five Critics' Choice Awards, including that prize for best picture.

Tina Fey's 30 Rock won three awards - Best Television Series Comedy, Best TV Actress for its creator, Fey, and Best Actor for Alec Baldwin.

The show about a show within a show has been a critical success since its debut three seasons ago but started pulling in higher audience numbers with guest appearances like those by Jennifer Aniston, Oprah Winfrey, and Salma Hayek and then when Fey went back to her launching pad for fame, Saturday Night Live, to imitate Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, in turn bringing attention to her own show at the same time.

Heath Ledger picked up a posthumous award for Best Performance by an Actor In A Supporting Role for The Dark Knight, the latest Batman installment. Ledger was also awarded in the same category at the January 8th Critics' Choice Awards.

Other winners include Kate Winslet for Best Actress in a Drama for Revolutionary Road, a film directed by her husband Sam Mendes, about a couple struggling to raise their two children in Connecticut in the mid-1950s. And for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for The Reader, a film about a woman defending herself in a war-crime trial in post-WWII Germany.

Mickey Rourke won Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture for The Wrestler about, what else - a wrestler. The film has received a lot of pre-awards season buzz.

More winners after the jump ...

Best Musical/Comedy went to Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona about two girlfriends on holiday in Spain who both fall in love with the same man.

Best Performance by an Actress in Musical or Comedy went to Sally Hawkins in Happy-Go-Lucky. Best Actor in the same category went to Colin Farrell in In Bruges.

Wall-E took the award for Best Animated Feature Film.

Best Foreign Language Film went to Waltz With Bashir.

Best TV Drama went to Mad Men and Best Mini-Series went to John Adams. Laura Linney and Paul Giamatti won for Best Actress and Best Actor for their roles in that Mini-Series, as did their co-star Tom Wilkinson for Best Supporting Actor.

Tina Fey should have thanked Sarah Palin during her acceptance speech. Or maybe John McCain for picking a running mate who looked like Tina Fey.

Thanks to Sarah, Fey became popular last year. Without Sarah, Fey's popularity would have continued to fizzle.
