Joaquin Phoenix Walks The Line

When two-time Oscar-nominee Joaquin Phoenix announced last week that he was retiring from acting, we began to wonder what prompted the talented thespian to make such an announcement. Now, The New York Post reports that friends close to the actor are worried about him, and after his odd behavior at Paul Newman's California Camp Benefit Concert in San Francisco earlier last week, others are beginning to grow concerned that something isn't quite right with the actor.

One attendee said the Walk The Line star "was out of it," and reports that Joaquin left in the middle of the event, only to "[wobble] back in a bit later." The source added, "It was odd. He was slurring his words and was unsteady on his feet." At the event, the actor broke his retirement news to Extra, and on Saturday night he displayed writing on his hands that said "Bye!" and "Good" at the AFI Film Festival in Los Angeles.

A rep for Phoenix released the following statement:

"He's fine. He just wants to focus on music, and he'll be at the screening of his film Two Lovers on Saturday night in LA, and he's directed a number of music videos over the past couple of years."

I think he looks rock n' roll. If it's true that he's not feeling well, I'm happy he's quitting acting. I get the feel he's not happy about all the attention he's getting (genuinely). The stuff he has to do when having finished a movie, promoting it. I think he doesn't appreciate that part. Good luck to you in the future Joaquin.

I saw Joaquin out in his own element, and he looked extremely happy, healthy and well-adjusted. He just hates the Hollywood scene, period. I am happy that he is leaving that behind and will focus on what makes him happy. I love you Joaquin, and wish you all the happiness in the world.

In other words, hes got enough money right now to do whatever he wants and hes drunk and foolish enough to burn bridges while he does it.

Sometimes great talent comes at a great price for the performer. To the person whos wrote: Another idiot who doesn't know how lucky he is. I'd just like to say you don't have a clue what you are talking about. To be a great actor, totally throw yourself into a role and put out a performance that stands out takes a toll. If he needs to pull back for a while he probably has his reasons. Hopefully we will see him again.
