They are doing what anybody would do -- trying to protect themselves from the invasion and the flash burn that goes with it. In many venues it is illegal to do what you are doing - by law, you can't photograph people without their permission, except in places like the land of fruits and nuts whose trees from which you hang.

It's amazing some paps haven't been killed or seriously hurt by now. Many have deserved it. X17's guys have generally been pretty civil, even kind, but some paps have been ravenous animals with no judgment or respect at all.
