Does Mariah Carey Have What It Takes?
We've got a chance to see history made, folks!
As Idolator's chart-watchers point out, Mariah Carey's "Touch My Body" actually scored the biggest Hot 100 debut on the most recent Billboard charts, checking in at #57 during its first full week of airplay. (Last week, it came in at #78 on the Hot R&B chart after only having been released to radio a few days earlier!)
True, those numbers might not be too impressive - but other numbers certainly are!
At the moment, Mariah's got a whopping seventeen career number-one hits - a total which actually ties her with Elvis Presley for most number ones by a solo artist.
If "Touch My Body" keeps up its pace, it might be the hit which lets her have the title all to herself!
It's worth noting that Mariah managed to pull off her big move during a part of the year traditionally dominated by recent Grammy winners - you'll notice, for instance, that Amy Winehouse had the second-biggest jump of the week with the re-entry of "You Know That I'm No Good" at #77.
So what do you think? Can Mariah dethrone the King? Or does "Touch" just not have what it takes?
Also worth keeping in mind - if Mariah manages to knock off the King with her eighteenth number one, that puts her within striking distance of the Beatles - the all-time record-holders with twenty!
