Was Mel B. Robbed?

melbdancingwiththestars.jpg
Not since the first season has a woman won the disco-ball trophy on Dancing With the Stars (and even that victory was practically revoked). This season, it seemed that a woman was poised to take home the prize, with only one male celeb in the final three, which included judge's favorite, Mel B.! But after faltering in the freestyle, the trophy eventually went to Helio and Julianne (last season's winner). Was Mel B. robbed? Is the competition unfairly slanted towards men, whose part in the dances are frequently less complicated? And can a woman EVER really win?

I love me some Helio and Julianne, but Mel and Maks should have won!

She was TOTALLY robbed!!!!
The womens' routines are really complicated! Its just not fair. She deserved to win, she had so many freaking perfect scores!

PARENTAL ADVISORY

IF MEL'S FACE DIDN'T LOOK LIKE IT WAS MADE OUT OF PLAY-DO AND INJECTED WITH A GALLON OF BOTOX, SHE MIGHT HAVE HAD A CHANCE.

AND IF SHE DIDN'T HAVE THOSE BIG CANTALOUPE-SIZED CANS, MEL WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN INVITED ON THE SHOW TO BEGIN WITH.

Just keepin' it real.

Mel was robbed! She was clearly the better dancer and did much more difficult moves and routines than the race car driver.
Love you Mel - you're gorgeous and talented!

She was a hasbeen before the show..now everyone knows her name and she will more than likely capitalize off it and never have to work a 9-5 ever again. She shouldnt complain.

She deserved it but anyway i knew she wouldnt win couse she's british. She's sexy though :)

She was the bette amateur dancer. Her and Makshims' routines were beautifully done. I enjoyed their freestyle. I suspected the blond bimbo and the stereotypical italian man would win. Could he have been more over the top with his adulation of this blond mormon chick. Uuuugghhh!.

She deserved to win, she was definately the best dancer!

Mr. Anonymous you are what make up the word nigger. Your a nigger.

Posted by: Anonymous

Blacks need to get the hell over thier own skin color. Its all they ever see and if anyone else fails to see their color, they are always the first to point it out. Its their crutch for failure. If they fail at anything...they blame their color. Time to get over it folks. Some of the most wealthiest and influential people in this country are black ...you know why that is? Because they dont use their color as a crutch. Try to learn from their examples.

Posted by: Anonymous

So she lost. Big deal.

Let her go back now to OLD SPICE and bottom out.

Posted by: Anonymous

Mr anonymous take your white ass to work. And stop typing on the computer. You lazy white piece of dog's shit. I bet your unemployed because you dont want to work. White trash

Posted by: Anonymous

Give me a break, robbed my ass. If people wanted her to win, they should've VOTED for her. Plain and simple.
It was fan votes that caused Kelly Monaco to win the first season.

Posted by: Anonymous

she was good, he was good. more people voted for Helio. just the way it played out. they both deserved to win. and anyone who even thinks to bash Julianne is a total jealous asshole. period. just like all the idiots who dog Jessica Alba. that girl is hugely talented and a great dancer.

I guess that why some of us blacks dont like whites because they are stupid , racist and they cheat all the time. Thanks for giving us the information that they cheated on the scores Karen .I knew something was fishy about the whole ordeal.

If blacks would stop aborting their babies, then their population would grow and there would actually be more blacks to vote in these petty little contests that are som important to them.

its a numbers game folks. you want to compete in the game, get your numbers up.

I voted for Marie Osmond. I didn't like Mel B. She was coarse and vulgar. Helio is okay, but I didn't think he was as good as Drew Lachay.

Keisha..can you please translate your ebonics to english for the rest of us?

Posted by: Anonymous

To solve the problem I think us latinos should take over everything. Im hoping for a latino president to take over america. And spanish to become the official language of America. English should be rank as second .Viva Mexico

Posted by: Rosa Moreno

It appears that all Marie's votes went to Helio. Although Maks' comments about Marie are completely true, he probably should not expressed it publicly. It may have assisted with the robbery of Mel's win. Mel did an excellent job.

Keishe, please shut up. You are only confirming the stereotypes people have of blacks with your uneducated vitriolic racist rants. You are an embarassment to the race. Go read a book and educate yourself instead of making a fool of not only yourself, but blacks as a whole.

I work for white people. I do notice they give us all the dirty jobs. But I just do them. Because i figure they are to lazy and don't want to do them. And someone has to. But if everything change. Us latinos we will have all the power. And all americans will be force to speak spanish as an official language. I think it should be more latinos in the white house. But hopefully things will change.

Mrs Angry black women aka whity There is one thing different between you and me . I dont give a damn what white people say about me or think about me. Im racist. Everything they say about the black race. You can also find in their race. A good example would be jerry springer that show is full of alot of uneductated white people. Its best that you dont even say anything to me. By the way I have a masters degree thank you very much. Hmm i curious to know what you think about the Black woman in VA that was raped by 6 whites and no one gives a damn . And they are not doing shit about it. Its a reason I chose to become a racist I been treated wrong by whites and they have done alot to me.

6 Arrests In Alleged Torture Case In W.Va. (CBS/AP) Authorities said Tuesday they are considering hate crime charges in the case of a woman who was tortured while being held captive for at least a week, and they are investigating the possibility that she was lured by a man she met on the Internet.

The victim was repeatedly called a racial slur while her captors sexually abused, beat and stabbed her, her mother said.

Six people, all white, including a mother and son and a mother and daughter, were arrested in connection with the alleged abduction of the 20-year-old black woman.

"I don't understand a human being doing another human being the way they did my daughter," Carmen Williams said Tuesday from her daughter's room at Charleston Area Medical Center General Hospital. "I didn't know there were people like that out here."

Megan Williams, with a cast on her arm, spoke barely above a whisper.

"I'm better," she said.

The Associated Press generally does not identify suspected victims of sexual assault, but Williams and her mother agreed to release her name.

A prosecutor said police are investigating the possibility that the victim was lured to the house where she was attacked by a man she met on the internet, but Carmen Williams insisted that wasn't the case. "This wasn't from the Internet," she said.

Deputies also interviewed the victim Tuesday morning. State, local and federal officials planned to meet later in the day to decide whether to file hate crime charges, Logan County sheriff's Sgt. Sonya Porter said. An FBI spokesman in Pittsburgh, Bill Crowley, confirmed that the agency is looking into possible civil rights violations.

The woman's abductors called her the N-word "every time they stabbed her," Carmen Williams told The Charleston Gazette earlier.

Authorities were still looking for two people they believe drove the woman to the house where she was abused, said Logan County Chief Deputy V.K. Dingess.

The case is "something that would have come out of a horror movie," Logan County Sheriff W.E. Hunter said.

Deputies found Williams on Saturday when they went to the house in Big Creek, about 35 miles southwest of Charleston, to investigate an anonymous tip from someone who had witnessed the abuse, Porter said Tuesday.

One of the suspects, Frankie Brewster, was sitting on the front porch and told deputies she was alone, but moments later the woman limped toward the door, her arms outstretched, saying "Help me," the sheriff's department said in a news release.

Carmen Williams said doctors told her daughter she may be well enough to leave the hospital within a few days, although a nurse said the young woman's condition was listed as "under evaluation."

"I just want my daughter to be well and recover," Carmen Williams said. "I know the Lord can do anything."

Besides being sexually assaulted, the woman was stabbed four times in the left leg and beaten, Porter said. Her eyes were black and blue. The wounds were inflicted at least a week ago, deputies said.

The woman was forced to eat rat and dog feces and drink from a toilet, according to the criminal complaint filed in magistrate court. She also had been choked with a cord, it alleges.

She was made to lick parts of Brewster’s body, under the threat of death, according to The Charleston Gazette. Her hair was pulled out. She was sexually assaulted while hot water was poured on her body, and while a man held a knife to her, the paper reported.

One of those arrested, Karen Burton, is accused of cutting the woman's ankle with a knife. She used the N-word in telling the woman she was victimized because she is black, according to the criminal complaint.

The six suspects were arrested Saturday and Sunday. Deputies were still trying to determine whether the woman knew her assailants, Porter said.

Brewster, the 49-year-old who owns the home where the alleged attacks occurred, is charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, malicious wounding and giving false information during a felony investigation.

Her son, Bobby R. Brewster, 24, also of Big Creek, is charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, malicious wounding and assault during the commission of a felony.

Burton, 46, of Chapmanville, is charged with malicious wounding, battery and assault during the commission of a felony.

Her daughter Alisha Burton, 23, of Chapmanville, and George A. Messer, 27, of Chapmanville, are charged with assault during the commission of a felony and battery.

Danny J. Combs, 20, of Harts, is charged with sexual assault and malicious wounding.

All six remained in custody Tuesday in lieu of $100,000 bail each, and all have asked for court-appointed attorneys.

The Human Face of Hate Crimes

In this most diverse society on earth, all of us are members of one or another minority - racial, religious, ethnic, cultural, national origin, sexual. That is why so many of us are vulnerable to hate crimes, and why violence motivated by bigotry has targeted so many different segments of society: African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Asian-Americans; Jewish-Americans and Arab-Americans; Native Americans; recent immigrants; women; and gays and lesbians, to name just a few.
Of the 7,947 hate crime incidents reported to the FBI in 1995, sixty percent - 4,831- were motivated by race. Of these, 2,988 were anti-black, 1,226 were anti-white, 355 were directed against Asian-Americans or Pacific Islanders, 221 were directed against multi-racial groups, and 41 were directed against Native Americans or Alaskan Natives.

Second to racially motivated hate crimes were hate crimes motivated by religious bigotry - 1,277 incidents in 1995. Of these, 1,058 - approximately 82% - were directed against Jews.

The third major category of hate crimes, accounting for 1,019 incidents in 1995, was motivated by animus against the victims' sexual orientation. Of these, 735 were directed against male homosexuals and 146 against lesbians.

The fourth category - ethnicity/national origin - accounted for 814 incidents with sixty three percent (516) directed toward Hispanics.

There is no systematic documentation of hate crimes against women because they are women, but women of all races and ethnic groups, and all social classes are targets of hate crimes.22

These stories convey a sense of how hate crimes victimize Americans of different races, religions, ethnic groups, and sexual orientation, as well as women.

Attacks upon African-Americans:
Among groups currently included in the Hate Crime Statistics Act, the greatest number of hate crimes of any kind are perpetrated against African-Americans. From the lynching to the cross-burning and the church-burning, anti-black violence has been and still remains the prototypical hate crime - an action intended not only to injure individuals but to intimidate an entire group of people. Hate crimes against African-Americans impact upon the entire society not only for the hurt they cause but for the history they recall, and perpetuate.

That is why the epidemic of fires at black churches has generated so much concern. Churches have always been the most important independent institution in the black community, and those who would attack African-Americans have often attacked their churches. As the historian C. Eric Lincoln writes in his recent book, Coming Through the Fire: Surviving Race and Place in America, the first recorded arson of a black church took place in South Carolina in 1822. White mobs torched black churches in Cincinnati in 1829 and in Philadelphia during the 1830's. After the Civil War, in their efforts to terrorize blacks and restore white supremacy, the Ku Klux Klan targeted black churches for vandalism and arson.23

This long and painful history still casts a long shadow. As Deval Patrick, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division, U.S. Department of Justice, recently declared: "In our society, arson of a church attended predominantly by African Americans carries a unique and menacing threat - that those individuals are physically vulnerable because of their race."24

As civil rights activism and the desegregation of public schools and public facilities stepped up during the 1950's and '60s, so did burnings and bombings of black churches, Jewish synagogues, and other houses of worship whose congregations were multiracial or whose clergy supported integration. While there were hundreds of attacks on churches and synagogues, the most infamous was the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, where four young girls were crushed to death.

An example of the historic continuity in the attacks upon black churches is the troubled history of St. John Baptist Church in Dixiana, South Carolina. Founded in 1765, the church has been the target of attacks throughout its history - a period that spans the eras of slavery, the Civil War, Reconstruction, segregation, and civil rights.25

In 1983, while Sunday services were underway, a group of whites shot out the church's windows. Coming back later in the day, they scrawled "KKK" on the door, destroyed the piano, smashed the crucifix, tore up the Bibles, scattered beer cans on the pews, and even defecated on the sacrament cloth. Over the next 12 years, more than 200 people were arrested for acts of vandalism against the church. Then, on August 15, 1995, the church was burned down. And, in May, 1996, three white teenagers were arrested and charged with burning down the church.

St. John Baptist Church was one of at least 73 African-American churches that suffered suspicious fires or acts of desecration since January 1, 1995.

While the great majority of the incidents took place in the South, other parts of the country have not been immune. For instance, in January, 1994, two members of the Fourth Reich Skinheads were sentenced to prison terms for plotting an attack on the historic First African Methodist Episcopal Church in South-Central Los Angeles. The racist skinheads had hoped that the attack, which was averted by their arrest, would trigger a race war.26

As the church-burnings have aroused increasing public concern, several commentators, including the editorial page of the New York Post, have called the issue a "hoax."27 While there is not definitive evidence of a national conspiracy - and civil rights advocates have not contended there is - these facts cannot be obscured:

73 predominantly black churches have been burned or desecrated since January, 1995.

A USA Today investigation found that, although a number of white churches have burned since January 1995, the rate of black church arsons is more than double what it had been in earlier years. And, of course, there are many fewer black churches (65,000) than white churches (300,000), so a much higher percentage of black churches have been burned.28

The USA Today investigation also found "two well-defined geographic clusters or 'Arson zones' where black church arsons are up sharply over the last three years."
The zones are:

1) a 200-mile oval in the mid-South that encompasses western Tennessee and parts of Alabama and Mississippi," and

2) another area that "stretches across the Carolinas, where the rate of black church arsons has tripled since 1993."29

Of those who have been arrested or prosecuted for destroying black churches since 1990, the majority have been white males between the ages of 14 and 45. And, of the 39 people who have been arrested in the arsons that occurred since January 1995, 26 have been white, 13 black.

Since 1990, at least 13 of the arsons of black churches took place in January around the holiday commemorating the birth of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
All this suggests that President Clinton is correct: "We do not have evidence of a national conspiracy, but it is clear that racial hostility is the driving force behind a number of these incidents. This must stop."

As with hate crimes against other groups, acts of violence and intimidation against African-Americans are by no means confined to the destruction of houses of worship. Other examples of hate crimes against blacks include:

On December 7, 1995, two African American residents of Fayetteville, North Carolina, were brutally and senselessly murdered by three soldiers who apparently identified themselves as neo-Nazi skin heads. Police said the soldiers were looking for black people to harass and shot the victims as they were walking down the street. A federal investigator later said, "This [crime] gives new meaning to the definition of a hate crime."30

On Friday, March 29, 1996, an African-American woman, Bridget Ward, and her two daughters, Jamila, 9, and Jasmine, 3, moved into a rented home in the virtually all-white Philadelphia neighborhood of Bridesburg. Late that night, she heard young people marching down the street, chanting, "Burn, motherf--, burn." The next morning, Ward, who works as a nurse's aide, found racial slurs smeared on her house, ketchup spilled on the front side walk and back porch, and an oily liquid was splattered in the rear. From Mayor Rendell to ordinary citizens, including many of Ward's neighbors, most Philadelphians were horrified by the incident. Police patrols were stepped up on the block, and the department's Crisis Prevention and Resolution Unit, which typically handles racial incidents, investigated the crime. But Ward continued to be subjected to racial harassment, including a letter threatening her and her children. Five weeks after she moved to Bridesburg, Ward announced her intention to move. The acts of racial hostility against the Ward family are typical of hate crimes intended to keep members of racial, ethnic, or religious minorities out of many neighborhoods.31

In Fairfax County, Virginia, an affluent community near Washington, D.C., in 1993, a 41-year-old black woman heard the doorbell ring at the home where she was house-sitting. When she looked out the window, she saw a cross burning 10 feet from the front door.32

A continent away, in 1994, in the Los Angeles suburb of South Gate, the white neighbors of a black woman burned a cross on her lawn, kicked her children, hanged and gassed her puppies, and placed "White Power" signs on her property.33

In Orland Park, Illinois in 1995, a black man who was talking with a white woman was attacked by a 25-year old white male who yelled racial slurs during the attack.34

In Berwick, Pa. a car driven by a black woman was struck repeatedly by a white man who yelled racial slurs and threatened to kill her and her son.35

In Harper Woods, Michigan, a black couple was threatened by a white man who said he would kill and dismember them if they moved into his neighborhood

This is what one white person wrote : By Robert Jensen, AlterNet. Posted June 7, 2006.

What do white people have to be afraid of in a world structured on white privilege? Their own fears.

It may seem self-indulgent to talk about the fears of white people in a white-supremacist society. After all, what do white people really have to be afraid of in a world structured on white privilege? It may be self-indulgent, but it's critical to understand because these fears are part of what keeps many white people from confronting ourselves and the system.

The first, and perhaps most crucial, fear is that of facing the fact that some of what we white people have is unearned. It's a truism that we don't really make it on our own; we all have plenty of help to achieve whatever we achieve. That means that some of what we have is the product of the work of others, distributed unevenly across society, over which we may have little or no control individually. No matter how hard we work or how smart we are, we all know -- when we are honest with ourselves -- that we did not get where we are by merit alone. And many white people are afraid of that fact.

A second fear is crasser: White people's fear of losing what we have -- literally the fear of losing things we own if at some point the economic, political, and social systems in which we live become more just and equitable. That fear is not completely irrational; if white privilege -- along with the other kinds of privilege many of us have living in the middle class and above in an imperialist country that dominates much of the rest of the world -- were to evaporate, the distribution of resources in the United States and in the world would change, and that would be a good thing. We would have less. That redistribution of wealth would be fairer and more just. But in a world in which people have become used to affluence and material comfort, that possibility can be scary.

A third fear involves a slightly different scenario -- a world in which non-white people might someday gain the kind of power over whites that whites have long monopolized. One hears this constantly in the conversation about immigration, the lingering fear that somehow "they" (meaning not just Mexican-Americans and Latinos more generally, but any non-white immigrants) are going to keep moving to this country and at some point become the majority demographically.

Even though whites likely can maintain a disproportionate share of wealth, those numbers will eventually translate into political, economic, and cultural power. And then what? Many whites fear that the result won't be a system that is more just, but a system in which white people become the minority and could be treated as whites have long treated non-whites. This is perhaps the deepest fear that lives in the heart of whiteness. It is not really a fear of non-white people. It's a fear of the depravity that lives in our own hearts: Are non-white people capable of doing to us the barbaric things we have done to them?

A final fear has probably always haunted white people but has become more powerful since the society has formally rejected overt racism: The fear of being seen, and seen-through, by non-white people. Virtually every white person I know, including white people fighting for racial justice and including myself, carries some level of racism in our minds and hearts and bodies. In our heads, we can pretend to eliminate it, but most of us know it is there. And because we are all supposed to be appropriately anti-racist, we carry that lingering racism with a new kind of fear: What if non-white people look at us and can see it? What if they can see through us? What if they can look past our anti-racist vocabulary and sense that we still don't really know how to treat them as equals? What if they know about us what we don't dare know about ourselves? What if they can see what we can't even voice?

Hello everyone! I called on monday to vote for Mel B. but the line was constantly buzy; probably milions of people could vote for her because of that. Unfortunely she didn't win but she was the best!!!!!!!I am not her fan but she deserve it to be a best dancer!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous

Back to the article, people! Geez!

Anyway...I think Mel B should have won regardless of her Spice Girl dancing background--which doesn't include ballroom techniquest btw...Mel B was the better dancer and entertainer hands down...Helio just mugged for the camera and acted like a clown, and apparently these American couch potatoes fell for it. Now besides all of the racist crap that's been said in here...I do believe there was an element of 'white sunshine' that influenced the votes--you got a perky blonde with bleached teeth--it was a popularity contest based on her looks rather than on Mel B's and Max's talents. For that, I think the voters were wrong. I read on another board from someone overseas stating that the voting that took place should be no surprise, since it was about the same thing that happened to get Bush in office. So true...choosing what makes you laugh over what is deservedly better...

Posted by: Shabby

Helio is clown, and I won't watch anymore this show because talented people never win!!!!Mel was so good I liked watch her. By the way I also couldn't call and vote because line was buzy.

I wonder if Mel is as a poor loser as her fans are?

wow that Keisha chick has the biggest chip on her shoulder that I've ever seen. I hope she stays away and keeps her sickening racists remarks to herself.
I'm white and I voted for Mel simply because she was the best. I would have voted for her if she was green. Not all whites are racists Keisha.
But I am Italian and resent the earlier remark about the Italian stereotype, the race car driver is Brazilian moron!

It is said she had a profile at a niche interracial dating site named interracialconnect.com. She started a special forum there for her fans. But recently someone put her nude pic there and caused huge discussion

I dont think she was robbed. It was fair that the trophy should go to someone with the disadvantage of not having been a dancer previous to the show. Mel B. had prior experience so she already knew how to dance well.. While Helio had to start from nothing. He was the most improved as was Jenny Garth...(who I think should have been in the final two) So the trophy should rightly go to the person with the best improvement. They need to stop putting celebs on that show that have previous dancing experience cause it puts other inexperienced new comers at a disadvantage. Besides I dont think she was as well liked as she thought.. word out is that most people did not like her and would rather have the race car driver win.

When it comes down to it, Mel B was the better dancer. That's what the show is about. Not about color or backgrounds. She is the better dancer. Yes, I believe she did get robbed. People voted for Helio even though she was the better dancer overall and had the highest score. So even thugh he took home the trophy, she went home with the highest score given to her by judges who know what they are talking about.
