It sounds like there are a lot of uninformed people out there. Paris Hilton and her offense is of a minor nature to the Sheriff's Dept in comparison to violent offenses and her medical condition aggravates the situation. Unfortunately the LA County Sheriff is under Federal mandate to not have any jail overcrowding also. In defense of the Sheriff he must decide that those who are not a RISK TO PUBLIC SAFETY be released early so that there is room to keep the VIOLENT CRIMINALS BEHIND BARS. The choice is pretty obvious that he would rather release Paris to keep the REAL CRIMINALS behind bars as he should. So if it means release Paris early to keep the murderers, rapist and child molesters behind bars he is making a smart decision. Paris is not being treated any differently from any other non-violent offender. My friend's niece was sentenced to 40 days in the same jail a week ago for the same charge as Paris (driving while her license was suspended), and was released in less than 24 hours (22 hours and 30 minutes).

In addition, the Superior Court Judges are very well aware that they cannot (and most will not) tell the Sheriff how to run and operate his jail.

JDSM, you are very wrong. LA's jails are full of people who are sentenced under non violent offences. You are right that under certain conditions, like over crowding, some non violent offenders are released. The first ones who are released, have served the highest percentage of their time. As for her medical condition, it is a non issue. They are more than capable of providing care for the many inmates suffering everything from a cold to cancer, heart problems, etc. You noted that your friends niece was released early for the same infraction as Paris committed, only a week ago. That certainly is a coincidence. One that I would bet the vast majority of people here at x17, don't believe. I certainly don't.

Believe it or not, "we" are not the only ones the justice system is to protect.

Often, minor criminals or even first time, not-so-minor criminals will be released or given deferred ajudication, etc if they have a supportive network outside of the "system." That includes poor, middle and rich folks. Naturally, the objective is to deter this criminal behavior and if a mama is at home with a switch to make it sink in, then that is where a young offender is likely to learn the lesson.

Unfortunately, Paris' family is not supportive in the right way. They did not teach her to respect the law and change her behavior - they enable her and help her find ways to circumvent authority. She truly thought the DUI laws don't apply to her. So the "system" is forced to move to the next step which is brief incarceration - to serve a wake-up.

This is not picking on Paris. It happens everyday in every court in every state. Even Paris' "psychiatrist" is an enabler and isn't helping her get over whatever mental troubles she has.

Believe me, the therapists in County Jail have seen it all and they don't enable...they dish out therapeutic call-downs on this kind of behavior.

Nobody wants to see Paris die or end up suicidal. She needs to get away from her screwed up, enabling family as much as Lindsay does. This is how it's done.
