This case is a blatant show of how celebrities are treated differently because of who they are. Hollywood socialite Paris Hilton was arrested on Sept. 7th on suspicion of drunk driving and later pleaded no contest in January to reckless driving. Police said she appeared intoxicated and failed a field sobriety test and she also had a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 percent, the level at which an adult driver is in violation of the law. She was then sentenced to 36 months’ probation, alcohol education and $1,500 in fines.
I believe that this is an issue of ethics if she gets off with little to no penalty. What can of message does this send to people? That if you are rich then you can’t get into trouble. The rules are simple don’t drink and drive. We all learned this rule when we were given the privilege to drive when we turned 16. There is no excuse for her behavior. Ms. Hilton was given many chances to lessen her punishment by following some very simple rules. Don’t drive for 36 months and enroll into an alcohol education program by Feb. 12. She had not enrolled, as of April 17 and she was also stopped two separate times for driving on probation. On January 15, two weeks after her sentence was given, she was pulled over and had to sign a document stating that she could not drive. She was then pulled over Feb. 27th and charged with violating her probation. It seems to me that she had many chances to make this incident go away easily. I don’t think that it is right for a girl who can hire as many drivers as she wants to chauffeur her around town to still flaunt her driving in the courts face. What she did was wrong and she deserves to go to jail for her crime. People all over the country have to deal with the consequences of their actions why should she be any different.
I hope that in the end Paris Hilton will fulfill her duty to society and serve her 45 days in jail. I hope that she grows up and learns to deal with the real world. Otherwise what message are we sending to the younger more impressionable generations below us? That drinking and driving is not a matter to be taken seriously. I believe that in the eyes of the court system we all should be treated equally.
