archive
A Swiss judge announced Roman Polanski would be released on bail and put on house arrest at his Alpine chalet.
The ministry said it was still deciding whether to extradite the Polish-born director to the United States to face rape charges stemming from a 1977 incident involving a 13 year-old girl. He has been living in France since 1978.
Polanski's bail has been set at $4.5 million and will require him to wear an ankle bracelet and to surrender his identity papers.
The Swiss are expected to decide whether to extradite Polanski in a couple of weeks and should he be ordered for extradition to the US, the decision will be subject to appeals.
