I am disappointed in the parents and Oprah for exploiting this child. This was way to soon for the kid to be on national TV discussing anything related to the case. Hockeynut I watched that episode of Oprah and I think the whole interview was tasteful and did not exploit Shawn at all. Oprah was told not to ask him certain questions and she did not ask him those question..she was very careful in what she did talk to him about. If you saw the show you were able to see Shawn tell her when he was not comfortable talking about a topic. Oprah did not push him. The show was simply doing what other show will do in time. I am sure if Shawn was not ready to do the show it would not have happen.

I would advise the parents of Shawn to keep the poor child out of the media and spotlight. He's been through enough already. He doesn't need to be paraded around like this. He needs to deal with this in the privacy of his home and certainly doesn't need his parents out talking about his ordeal. Remember, he is a teenager. Hiding what happened to him won't change any of it and coming out to the public as a survivor might do wonders for him. He's a child, but an older one and in the end, if he wants to speak about his experience it might actually be cathartic for him.

I think it is AWESOME that they were found safely but i also think that the parents and media needs to leave this boy alone and let him live his life from here on out instead of having to think about all the shit he went through. Mel, he was kidnapped 4 years ago and apparently when the man who snatched him grabbed another boy, there was a witness. When they found Ben (the recent kidnap victim) in the apartment, they also found Shawn.

i thought the Oprah interview was well done but there were a few times I thought he looked uncomfortable which is to be expected i guess. God bless shawn & his family and the families of missing people worldwide. I cannot fathom the pain either the parents or children endure. His friend is truly a hero!

Maybe the Oprah show will protect the boy -- the message is now loud and clear to the media that he does not want to talk about it. Same with the public. Maybe she was the PR vehicle to educate all of us not to harrass him with questions. I thought she did OK for the most part in being discrete. I think maybe her interview with him could have been shorter though and I wouldn't have had him live on the show after the clip -- he looked uncomfortable in that part.

Someday there will probably be a Lifetime movie about his life which has been changed forever. I hope he at least gets rich off of this horrible ordeal.

I just read something on MSN that he was possibly sexually abused (i think even his own parents suggested the chance when they were on Oprah), so i think he might not want to be in the spotlight so much. It's amazing that they can reveal those details and how the media is probably going to take that and run with it, and not consider at all that this poor boys face has been splashed all over the place. Rape victims have the benefit of anonymity and that's being taken away from him.

He says he wants to help other kids so that it never happens to him. I just hope he's given the time and privacy he needs to mentally heal from what must have been a really rough experience. God bless that boy and others like him.

I live in the same area as Shawn.. the bad thing is that the police officers are getting all the credit in seeing the truck. Actually, there were 2 other people who saw the truck, and told the police officers to come and look at the truck. One guy's name is Jeff. He was on the news the first day they found Shawn, but has been left out of it since. I do not think it right to give the police officers ALL the credit. They did not see the truck until Jeff told them to look at it... that being said.. nice gesture ed

You people who are criticizing Elizabeth Smart and Shawn Hornbeck also need to understand what mental, emotional, and psychological trauma a kid goes through when he/she is repeatedly raped. It's not like getting a skinned knee or a paper cut. Sexual abuse is very traumatizing and very stigmatizing. You say kidnapped kids should be able to escape their captors, despite being horribly abused. If it's that simple, why doesn't every child abused by parents/caregivers run away from home? Why don't all battered wives leave their husbands? Why don't battered husbands leave their wives? Why don't the elderly who are abused in nursing homes seek help? It's obviously not as simple as "just walk away". Otherwise, womens shelters would be a lot fuller, our prisons would be a lot fuller, and we'd be hearing a lot more stories about kids' heroic escapes from kidnappers. This "blame the victim" mentality that everyone seems to have seriously needs to go the way of the dinosaur.

I went through something horrific for years starting at age 11 and I was convinced that if i told, i would be killed.. someone in my own home .. i lived the rest of my life doing normal kids things, and never telling, because the damage and removal of who you are is so severe.. you start to beleive that this is who you are, this is your life, so you cant change it, and try to get joy where you can..
