(08/29/08 9:29 AM)

LOS ANGELES, California (X17online) - With films such as The Dark Knight, Iron Man, and Indiana Jones 4, the 2008 summer box office has gone above and beyond expectations, and it may even come close to beating the records held last summer. Led by the third installments of the Spiderman and Shrek franchises, the summer 2007 box office earnings passed the $4 billion mark domestically, which was the highest gross on record.

The summer box office comes to a close on Labor Day, and many critics expect the box office earnings from this summer to come close to last summer's domestic gross of $4.16 billion, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
