The protesters, from a group called "Anonymous," loudly chanted "Scientology kills!" Some wore masks like in the movie "V for Vendetta," and one poster read: "FREE KATIE."

Inside the theater, Katie's husband Tom Cruise caused the sell-out crowd to stir as he took his seat moments before the curtain went up for the first performance of the play "All My Sons."

After the show, Cruise praised his wife's debut. He told the Associated Press the performances was, "Extrodinary."
