Adam Sandler's "Bedtime Stories" was second, with $28.1 million for the weekend.

Brad Pitt's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" was third, earning an estimated $27 million.

It was certainly a happy holiday season for Hollywood. Ticket sales had plunged the previous two weekends, but Hollywood ended the year on a high note as the top 12 movies took in $182.5 million, up 8 percent from the same weekend in 2007.
