BEVERLY HILLS, California (X17online) - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that, following a two-month-long correspondence exchange with Academy president Tom Sherak, 79-year-old Jean-Luc Godard has regretfully declined to attend the November 13 Governors Awards to personally receive his Honorary Oscar. Instead, the Academy will arrange for the Oscar statuette to be delivered to him in Switzerland, following the event.

“He reiterated his thanks for the award and also sent his good wishes to the other individuals being honored the same night – Kevin Brownlow, Francis Ford Coppola and Eli Wallach – who he refers to as ‘the three other musketeers ” reported Sherak.

Anne-Marie Miéville, Mr. Godard’s wife and collaborator, had said previously that her husband was annoyed by the fact that the award was being given out at an event held months before the Oscars ceremony. Ms. Miéville expressed: “He’s getting old for that kind of thing. Would you go all that way just for a bit of metal?”

The November 13 dinner ceremony will pay tribute to Godard, a pioneer of the French New Wave movement, through film clips and commentary by his admirers.
