Lewis released a statement through the MDA:

"As a labor of love, I've hosted the annual Telethon since 1966 and I'll be making my final appearance on the show this year by performing my signature song, 'You'll Never Walk Alone.'"

Lewis' final appearance will be on the six-hour show Sept. 4.

Although he will no longer be hosting the show, Lewis claimed he will "never desert MDA and [his] kids."

In 2009, Lewis was given the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences in honor of his work with and dedication to the MDA.
