Wiig will star as the title character, as announced by Maven Pictures and Anonymous Content on Tuesday. The news comes on the heels of the SNL star's rave reviews for her leading role in Bridesmaids, though this upcoming dramatic comedy is darker than Wiig's usual fare.

“It’s basically about a girl who kind of pretends to kill herself,” the 37-year-old actress told IndieWire.com. “Starting off really funny, isn’t it? She does it to get her recently ex-boyfriend’s attention. She ends up having to go live with her mom, whom she hasn’t seen in years. It’s kind of about going back home, so she finds her life again and gets reintroduced to her family, kind of a coming home story.”

Wiig had been in talks to star in the dark comedy since last summer. She will executive produce with Shari Springer Berman, Michelle Morgan and Steve Golan. Berman and her American Splendor co-director Robert Pulcini will direct.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Imogene will begin shooting August 8 in New York City.
