The film, a tribute from Depp to the late journalist Hunter S. Thompson, ranked fifth at the box office and grossed an underwhelming $5 million in its opening weekend.

The numbers are unbecoming of Depp, who has starred in three of the ten highest-grossing films of all time, including 2006’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest ($1.07 billion), 2011’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($1.04 billion), and 2010’s Alice in Wonderland ($1.02 billion).
