This puts Christopher Nolan's action film as the third highest-earning movie of all time, beating out the $158.4 million opening of 2008's The Dark Knight. The Avengers ($207.4 million) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2 ($169.2 million) hold the number one and two spots, respectively.

The film was estimated to bring in $175 million over the weekend, but after the shooting that left 12 dead and dozens injured, Warner Bros. announced it would hold off reporting the film's opening grosses until today.

The studio said in a statement to ABC News, "Out of respect for the victims and their families. Warner Bros. Pictures will not be reporting box office numbers for 'The Dark Knight Rises' throughout the weekend. Box office numbers will be released on Monday."
