The film's Danny Boyle was named Best Director.

Kate Winslet took the award for Best Actress for her performance in "The Reader."

"Let me tell you, winning is really a lot better than losing," Winslet, a six-time nominee, said. "A lot better."

Sean Penn was named Best Actor for his portrayal of slain civil rights activist Harvey Milk in "Milk." This is the second time Penn has won the award.

"You commie, homo-loving sons of guns," Penn began in accepting the prize. "I did not expect this and I want it to be very clear that I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me often."

Penelope Cruz won the Oscar in the Supporting Actress category for her work in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona." Taking the stage, she asked: "Has anyone ever fainted here? I might be the first one."

As expected, the Academy named the late Heath Ledger as Best Supporting Actor for his role as "The Joker" in "The Dark Knight." Ledger's father, mother and sister accepted the award on his behalf.

"When he came home for Christmas a year ago, he had been sending me shots and bits of pieces from the film," sister Kate Ledger said. "And I said to him, 'I have a feeling this is it for you; you're going to get a nomination for this from the Academy.' And he just looked at me and smiled. So he knew."
