The Oscar-winning director's legal team has been filing appeals in the case, hoping to delay his return to Los Angeles. Once here in LA, authorities are looking to have Polanski sentenced on rape charges. He is accused of giving drugs to Samantha Geimer, then aged 13, and raping her at the home of actor Jack Nicholson back in 1977. Polanski was indicted on six felony counts and pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful sexual intercourse.

Polanski has been living under house arrest at his Swiss chalet in the luxury resort of Gstaad. Back in 1978, he fled the U.S. on the eve of his sentencing date, and authorities have been trying to get him back ever since.

If the Swiss ministry approves his extradition, experts say the director could file further appeals in Switzerland that could further delay his return to the U.S. for months. According to U.S. prosecutors, Polanski could face up to two years behind bars.
