sherripic200.jpgMANHATTAN, New York (X17online) - The View is under fire for controversial comments made by cohost Sherri Shepherd and comedian D.L. Hughley ... in relation to African American males and HIV.

On the June 22 episode, Hughley said, "When you look at the prevalence of HIV in the African American community, it's primarily young women who are getting it from men who are on the down low."

Shepherd added, "It's so big in the black community with women because they're having sex with men who have been having sex with men."

In response, the Black AIDS Institute and the National Black Justice Coalition took out an ad in Variety saying, "The Centers for Disease Control has publicly disproven this myth. And since June 22, thousands of people have written to ABC, asking that The View provide correct information to viewers. Unfortunately, those requests have been greeted with silence from both ABC and The View."

GLAAD has also encouraged viewers to contact ABC and The View's executives to demand an on-air apology. The organization tells X17online:

“Since ABC and 'The View' still refuse to address the harmful effects of their misinformation on-air, we hope that today’s ad and the media attention it attracts will educate viewers and media professionals about the dangerous inaccuracies perpetuated on the program.”
