paranormal200.jpgLOS ANGELES, California (X17online) - Paranormal Activity 2 made a record-breaking $6.3 million during its midnight premiere on 1,800 screens ... making it the highest midnight grossing R-rated film of all time.

The scary flick beat out the previous record holder, Watchmen ... which brought in $4.6 million last year.

Director and producer Oren Peli said the following about why the film has been so successful:

"It taps into people's primal fears of what happens at night and while you're asleep and most vulnerable," he said. "So, the first one, and this one as well, kind of taps into those types of fears that everyone, across the world, shares."

This weekend, Paranormal Activity 2 will be up against Clint Eastwood's Hereafter, and the current box office champ, Jackass 3-D.
