The director is set to receive the lifetime achievement award on Sept. 27 – an award he was slated to receive in 2009, until Swiss police arrested him on charges of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl prior to his arrival at the festival.

Polanski was subsequently placed under house arrest as Swiss courts considered extraditing him to the United States to formally face his charges; he was ultimately set free.

Organizers of the Zurich Film Festival have expressed their support of Polanski, releasing the statement, “We have always been tremendous admirers of his work and we are delighted that we will soon be able to express this to him in person.”
