Parade organizers reached out to the famed director after a retrospective of his work debuted at the Museum of Modern Art, which included an inflatable character named “Balloon Boy.”

“It’s such a surprise to be asked, and it was great,” Burton told The New York Times. “It’s such a surreal thing that you don’t even believe what you’re hearing. Somebody’s trying to play a joke on you or something. It had that kind of feeling.”

Burton is designing a character named B. Boy for the parade, who he says originated from leftover balloons used in children’s parties at a London children’s hospital.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will float through New York on Nov. 24.
