David Letterman let loose last night on Lindsay Lohan, asking her, "Aren't you supposed to be in rehab?" And he prodded: "How many times have you been to rehab? ... What are they rehabbing, first of all? ... Why are you always in trouble?"

Lindsay quipped back, "We didn't discuss this in the pre-interview." She went on to tell Dave, "I'm happiest when I'm working and the healthiest and I think this is an opportunity for me to, you know, focus on what I love in life. I don't think it's a bad thing. I think it's a blessing and not a curse."

The interview wrapped with Lindsay practically in tears ... she called Dave "very sweet" after he complimented her for having "enough spine, enough sense of yourself, enough poise to come out here and talk to me."

Lindsay told the audience she's actually "looking forward to rehab," saying, "I'm looking forward to some time for myself. The next time I come on the show, that will be in my past."

When we snapped her on the way in she was in relatively good spirits, but on the way out she couldn't resist working it for photographers in this short 'n sexy leather skirt ... hawt!

Lilo tweeted, "Had a wonderful time at the @Late_Show. It was great fun! #iHeartDave."

Earlier in the day she wrote (and all in one tweet), "I love the beautiful Kardashian sisters! I wish E picked better photographs of me! I feel pregnant when I'm fat! I'm working out constantly!" Either she's pulling a Joaquin Phoenix on us or she's fallen quite far from her What I Like About You days...

The 27-year-old starlet is also taking to Twitter to address recent tabloid reports about her alleged bizarre behavior, and regarding a story that she had a meltdown at NYC’s John Barrett Salon, she wrote, "I love my hair this way! This is before a hair stylist @ John Barrett FRIED my hair with bleach then lied2 Intouch." Apparently a salon source told In Touch Weekly, “Amanda said she wanted to go blond. When the colorist finished, she didn’t think her hair was blond enough, so she started rubbing bleach through her hair with her hands ... Everyone was horrified.”

Lilo is currently promoting Scary Movie 5, and on Thursday she's set to appear at the Los Angeles premiere with pal Charlie Sheen and the rest of the cast. And speaking of appearances, Lilo didn't show up at a scheduled deposition here in California yesterday, but at this point it doesn't look like she'll be in too much trouble for her absence, though she'll likely receive a fine.

Photographer Grigor Balyan filed a lawsuit claiming Lilo's assistant struck him with a car in 2010 when leaving a Hollywood nightclub with the starlet in the passenger seat, and his lawyer, Neil Steiner told the NY Daily News on Monday that her absence violated a court order and he planned to report it to the judge. Lohan missed a previous deposition in the case in February, but she was fined $1,000.

“She’s clearly here in New York. She’s scheduled to go on David Letterman’s show tonight so I don’t think she ever contemplated being in California Monday,” Lohan’s criminal lawyer Mark Heller said in a statement on Tuesday. He added that he would speak to Lohan’s civil lawyer in California “to work something out.”

However, one place we KNOW Lilo will be (and on time) is the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which kicks off this Friday. The second weekend kicks off next Friday, and we're guessing Lilo will be staying the whole week and hitting up some of the star-studded parties. Seems like a good idea to get all this out of her system before she heads to rehab...
