The Beaver, starring Mel Gibson, opened May 6 in 22 theaters in major cities across the U.S., and the movie made a paltry $104,000.

The question is, can Mel's floundering career survive a box office failure? The Beaver was actually fairly well-reviewed, with a 65 percent approval rating on RottenTomatoes.com and critics applauding Mel's performance.

But controversy has surrounded the actor's career since last summer, when recordings of him screaming at ex Oksana Grigorieva hit the Internet and she accused him of abuse (she dropped the allegations last week.)

Still, maybe the movie is to blame. The film, about a father who starts speaking through a puppet, is definitely a niche project. It's a unique comedy drama that industry insiders say would have been tough to market with any actor in the leading role (Steve Carell was once attached). But, the Mel Gibson of old might have been a big enough name to draw a crowd, similar to what Brad Pitt did for the independent film Babel.

The Beaver, directed by Jodie Foster, opens in wide release May 20. Gibson has not done any major press for the movie, though at the end of April he gave his first interview since last summer. The Los Angeles Lakers have been eliminated from the playoffs after losing 98 - 92 to the Dallas Mavericks. Forward Lamar Odom says the team lost because they didn't have a "cohesive bond."

Odom was whistled for a flagrant foul after blindsiding Mav's Dirk Nowitzki with 9:06 remaining in the fourth.

Odom tells the Los Angeles Times:

"I was a little embarrassed. I went to fill the rim out [with the free throw attempt], they were already up 30 [when Nowitzki batted the ball away] and I didn't mean anything by it."

Lakers coach Phil Jackson had the following to say about Lamar's fouls.

"I wasn't happy with the way our players exited the game on Lamar and Andrew's part. It was unnecessary, but I know they were frustrated and Barea was one of the guys that really frustrated us today."

In bizarre news of the day, Bristol Palin will star in a new reality show with fellow Dancing With The Stars contestant Kyle Massey and his brother.

Palin, 20, and her son Tripp, 2, will live with Massey, 19, and his brother Chris, 21, in Los Angeles. The show will follow Palin as she moves from Alaska to LA and starts working for a charity. It's scheduled to air later this year in half-hour episodes on the BIO (Biography) channel.

So, why is BIO interested in Bristol? The network's Executive Vice President of Programming says, "Bristol is the kind of personality BIO is drawn to." ... OK. He also said that Bristol and the Massey brothers are "best friends" and that she will be opening up about her real life for "the first time." Other than, you know, the memoir she's publishing in June.

Whitney Houston has checked into rehab for drug and alcohol use, her rep confirms.

"We can confirm that Whitney Houston is currently in an out-patient rehab program for drug and alcohol treatment. Whitney voluntarily entered the program to support her long-standing recovery process."

Apparently the singer is allowed to go out in public as long as she's accompanied by a monitor. A week ago, Houston was spotted at a Prince concert in Los Angeles with daughter Bobbi Kristina. Houston reportedly joined Prince on stage at one point.

LeAnn Rimes is typically Tweet happy, but she was especially so on Mother's Day. The newlywed Tweeted for the occasion:

"Happy Mother's Day! Hope every woman has a beautiful day celebrating the unconditional and unselfish love they give their children and 'bonus children' ... "

Rimes is apparently a self-proclaimed "bonus mom" to new husband Eddie Cibrian's kids with ex Brandi Glanville, 7-year-old Mason and 4-year-old Jake. On Twitter, 28-year-old LeAnn's profile reads, "WIFE, Bonus Mom ... " On Sunday, she thanked her fans:

"Thank you all so much for the special "Bonus Mom" wishes :)"

So, did Cibrian's kids do anything for their "Bonus Mom" on Mother's Day? Rimes was in Toronto filming a CMT original movie, so she wasn't with the kids. But, she Tweeted:

" ... I got gifts and homemade cards....sweet"

Tension has reportedly been running high between Cibrian and Glanville since it was announced that Glanville is the newest housewife on Bravo's The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Glanville has already started filming, but Cibrian says he doesn't want their kids filmed for the show. Reports are that Cibrian has been threatening to take legal action to keep Mason and Jake off camera.

But, sources say, Glanville argues that Cibrian had no problem publishing photos of the kids from his wedding to Rimes. We wonder if Glanville knows that her kids gave LeAnn Mother's Day gifts ...

Kate Middleton's gorgeous sister Pippa has been given the offer of a lifetime from porn company Vivid Entertainment ... $5 Million to appear in just ONE explicit sex scene.

Vivid's CEO Steven Hirsch sent Pippa Middleton a personal letter with an offer to star in one of his upcoming films. In the note, Steven writes:

"As far as I was concerned, you were the star of the recent Royal Wedding. As I watched a broadcast of the event I couldn't help but think that with your beauty and attitude, you could be an enormously successful adult star. For just one explicit scene I would be pleased to offer you $5-million and, or course, you would have your choice of partner. "

The letter goes on to say Kate's brother James can make a milllion, too. Hirsch adds:

"If you would like to bring your brother James along, he could appear in a separate scene for another $1-million."

Vivid's rep tells X17online, "We haven't heard back yet."

Paris and Nicky Hilton love the limelight, but seems as though they love their mom Kathy even more! The heiresses took their beautiful mom to dinner at Boa in West Hollywood for Mother's Day.
