Brits Are No Fans Of Britney's Circus

SpearsEuropeTour.jpgDespite overwhelming fan support, the British media is bashing Britney's first stop on the European leg of her Circus tour.

And even though Brit's added some new remixes and songs to her line-up since her hugely successful US tour, the initial reviews have not been kind.

The Sun said:

"[Britney is] completely uninspiring... A girl walking around, flicking her hair and miming to some average pop songs."

The Daily Telegraph said:

"Lipsynced, auto-tuned and double tracked, her vocals are as unashamedly pre-recorded as her backing tracks. It's the most perfectly plastic pop show ever staged."

At least the Daily Mail was charitable. Noting how Britney has overcome many of her past troubles, the paper called Spears pop music's most "remarkable comeback."

Most those review are kinda harsh don't ya think?

Why do you think they are bashing Britney?

Not harsh- true.

Meh. Britney never gets good reviews for anything she's ever done. Since she started ten years ago the media has bashed her, so this is nothing new. Her reviews in North America weren't any kinder. The fact is is it doesn't matter what critics think of her. She has overwhelming fan support that pack her concerts, buy her albums and merchandise. If she can appeal to a strong fan base, then she will be around for another ten years. It worked for Madonna.

Posted by: Anonymous

Not harsh at ALL - she is nothing without effects, electronics, lighting, costumes etc., etc., etc. She has no talent otherwise - and these days she can't even be considered "hot"...

Posted by: Anonymous

Oh! SLAM! They're only saying what everyone already knows! The Queen of All Things Mentally Ill can't sing, can't perform, can't entertain! She's a uber medicated zombie! Daddy keep spoon feeding her those meds or she'll break out the razor, shave her head bald and start sporting her favorite pink wig!

Posted by: Anonymous

mabbo, crazy is as crazy does. her "fans" just pay to see a mentally incompetent 30 year old embarrass the hell out of herself. Freak show!

Posted by: Anonymous

hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
what a loser!
she never seems to be able to wow anyone. except britards, and most of them have IQ's in the double digits.

Posted by: Anonymous

still, she is more talented, respected and relevant than Blohag... at least she is working and not hocking leggins & spray tan

Posted by: Anonymous

saw her in concert in april, she does need to dance alot more. Here dancing and singing combined is the reason why she is so famous

Posted by: Anonymous

they all lip sync, she has a huge world wide fan base and is a money making machine, who cares about the critics when she is PACKING arena w o r l d w i d e.

Posted by: Anonymous

people are dropping $100 a tic to see her, Schlind Blothemandown couldn't get that for a butt fuk lmao!

Are you serious, X17? Reviews have been AMAZING! You take excerpts from reviews instead of posting the whole thing. Most reviews have been positive. You picked two reviews out of the dozens that have been posted. While some give her flack for her lip-syncing, they APPLAUD HER for putting a great show.

I'm sure the X17tards are gonna get on this and bash her. But there isnt a reason to, cause she is getting GOOD PRESS FROM THE UK!

BRITNEY IS THE QUEEN..she can do whatever she wants!

Posted by: Anonymous

9:25: They all who lip sync? No concerts I go to do they ever lip sync. EVER. Course, those are rock concerts. Maybe pop and rock stars do things differently at shows.

As much as I love Brit, I wish she would sing live. After-all, that is what her fans want to hear when the pay to see her show: HER singing, not her prerecorded disc.

Posted by: wouldntyouliketoknow

Don't mess with the British media! They are just telling it like it is not like the Americans who make celebrities out of no talents like Britney Spears - they are spot on with their reviews. She can't sing - end of story.

Posted by: Anonymous

Love her, Hate her, Say what you want about her! It's all entertainment folks, and that is where Britney reigns supreme...

Posted by: Anonymous

Whatever... she makes millions doing what she is doing. Bad reviews or not. Maybe its the fans that are silly for throwing their money away. But Brits laughing all the way to the bank.

FINALLY!!!!!! THE PRESS GETS IT RIGHT. THIS IDIOT IS UNINSPIRING WITH HER ARM WAVING, LIP SYNCING, HAIR FLIPPING SAME OLD SAME OLD CRAP. AS FOR MOST REMARKABLE COMEBACK??? SHE HAS TO BE BABYSAT 24/7 BY HER OWN FATHER AND IS CONTROLLED OVER EVERY THING SHE DOES.

BRITNEY SPEARS IS A JOKE PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

Posted by: and yer curry too!!

Sounds a whole lot like a review I read on a Bollywood flick...amazing~~

Posted by: Hate her!

Lets all hope she dies!

YES!

Posted by: Anonymous

Britney doesn't usually get good reviews...because she isn't really good at anything. Her fans love her for some reason that has nothing to do with beauty, talent or a good heart.

Posted by: Anonymous

X17-where are the pictures and story of LiLow flashing her crusty, warty nekkid cooter? Perez has them and they are disgusting and scarry...

Posted by: Chuck Roast

I wish she would shave her head again. I'd pay to see that.

Posted by: Anonymous

I was there in London last night and I loved it. Britney put on an amazing show, full of awe enspiring specatcles, and she danced lots. The only reason she walked around so much was so the whole arena could see her.

Posted by: Anonymous

10:07 Your WRONG !! All the lawyers and Daddy Spearest and K-fed, they are laughing all the way to the bank Shitney ?? She gets ALLOWANCE of 1500 a week at age 27. She might make millions but she SPENDS millions just to function everyday. When she is finally locked up and a total lost cause, pray she has a little morsel left. The vultures in her life have only just begun to peck away the flesh, and there's a lot of meat left on them cash cow bones (literaly... lots of meat ).

Posted by: LefsaFan

That's what you would expect from the Sun and Daily telegraph. The BBC gave her an excellent review. The British critics are generally the harshest in the world, even to their own celebrities.

Posted by: the sun is full o chinandas

oh lawdy lawd...she dun need h'a sum spaa-cie car'ry to make that show come' live!! then she can sing oll high pitch like i dun saw in dem one hindjian movie drr wid'em dorkies in colorful dresses...

Some BBC quotes
"Since Britney Spears's last UK concert in 2004, she has been married, had two children, got divorced, shaved off her hair, been admitted to hospital and taken her former manager and an ex-boyfriend to court.

Her recent TV appearances, including last year's X Factor performance, have seemed lacklustre and non-committal.

So the question on the opening night of her European tour was which Britney was going to turn up: the pop princess with the killer moves, or the disaster-struck diva in her slipped crown?

It was largely the former, "good" Britney. But it was a close call."

"Meanwhile, the choreography - so tight and intricate at the beginning - began to drift into aimless posing and hip-swivelling.

Britney was a particular culprit here, strutting across the stage while her dancers put in the hard work around her.

So, in the end, she didn't quite give it her all."

Posted by: mick

The Brits have more of a tendency to give honest reviews rather then act like miming the whole concert and barely dancing constitutes a fantastic, great concert. Her back ground dancers and production isn't bad but Britney is.

Posted by: Anonymous

I think she is doing much better than she was a year ago. She made many mistakes though, as a human being, she is entitled to do so. I'm glad she is turning her life around and I hope she will stay on track.

Most those review are kinda harsh don't ya think?

Harshness is subjective. There seems to be a hierarchy of harsh reviews. The British newspapers wrote harsher reviews about her pre-tour X Factor performance than the 02 concert. The Canadian newspapers wrote harsher reviews than the British and most U.S. newspapers. In the U.S., northeastern newspapers wrote harsher reviews than mid-western newspapers. Naturally the southern newspapers wrote the most favorable reviews of their native daughter. I was a little taken aback when the harshest review came from a western newspaper.

The San Francisco Chronicle wrote, “Most cultures bury their dead, but here, we lavish them with hordes of backup dancers, expensive stylists and the best Swedish pop hits money can buy just to prop them up on a stage and watch them entertain us. So it goes with Britney Spears, who, despite all outward signs of being unable to count to 11, much less headline a big-budget revue, has been getting dragged around the country for the past two months to promote her sixth album, "Circus." Then again, whoever is in charge of Spears' affairs these days has gone to great lengths to make sure people actually pay very little attention to Spears.”

In my opinion, THAT was unnecessarily harsh!

Posted by: minx & zoro

The reviews are just the same her show is!

Posted by: Anonymous

It doesn't matter what the critics say because they're not the ones buying her tickets. Her fans are and Britney has one of the biggest support systems in the whole entertainment industry. Besides, the U.K. critics are harsh on everyone. They even give Madonna (their queen) bad reviews, The Sun actually called her most recent tour "a joke".

Posted by: Anonymous

Its obvious that the fans are gonna show support. But before anyone dares to try and make another harsh call, think about this.

Britney's tour is in the round. Meaning, the stages, divided into 3 parts, are 360 degrees. She cant stand in one place and dance like crazy. She's walking around so EVERYONE gets a piece. If the stage wasn't as big, she'd be dancing her ass off, no doubt about it.

As for her reviews, BBC, Daily Mail, and many others gave her a good review. Because unlike you all, who are too stupid to care, she bills herself as an ENTERTAINER! She doesn't consider herself a full time singer or a full time dancer. She puts on a show for everyone. Even in her darkest days, she was still doing her job. She was giving everyone a show, right?

If you dont like her or what she does, TOO DAMN BAD! She isnt going to go anywhere anytime soon. And until you losers figure that out, your b*tching isnt going to get you ANYWHERE!

She still has that draw. She's one of the most famous people in the world, and she didnt get there by just standing there, did she? An estimated 22 million albums, from her first two albums ALONE! She has sold almost 100 million records, and she sint even 30 yet. Obviously, she has a spark, one that alot of people love. Just because you dont like her doesnt mean that you're going to automatically see her fall of a cliff.

'Sluggish' Britney fails to deliver one more time
Britney Spears: O2 Dome, London
By SIMON GARNER - Thursday, June 4, 2009

Hello cowboy: Britney was 'sluggish' during her first show Oh Britney, Britney, how was I supposed to know that your return to our shores would be such a letdown? Well perhaps I should've guessed - the warning signs were out there. You may recall Brit's performance on X-Factor this Christmas, but if you don't let me fill you in. She lip-synched, she moved around the stage like my 50-year-old aunty and she showed no interest in interacting with her audience whatsoever.

Posted by: Metro.co.uk

Fast-forward six months and here we are at the O2 Arena for Britney's opening night of her Circus European tour, her long-awaited return to the stage. What's changed from that incredibly underwhelming X-Factor showing? Well, apart from a few acrobats, absolutely nothing.

It's such a shame, because as a pure spectacle the show has all the makings of an out-and-out hit. Britney is backed up by an incredibly talented team of circus performers who open the show with a real bang. If only Britney could display the same levels of intensity and sheer talent we'd have a great show on our hands.

But this is a pale shadow of the pop princess who first exploded onto the scene in 1999 with fantastic breakout hit Baby One More Time.

Posted by: Metro.co.uk

There were reports she was singing live for these performances, but it was hard to tell if this was actually the case and her dancing seemed sluggish, as if she was playing everything out in slow motion.

Her set is made up mostly of tracks from her last two albums and was unerringly upbeat, only pausing for breath on ballad Everytime, when she swung from the nook of a giant umbrella suspended from the roof rafters.

She almost pulled it out of the bag with mega hit Toxic, getting the entire crowd on their feet for the one and only time in the whole night.

But she lost momentum as soon as she'd gained it with an underwhelming bass-heavy remix of Baby One More Time to wrap up the show that managed to drain all the joy from the original version.

I'm sorry for the double post.

The encore involved Brit dressing in a sexy police uniform for Womanizer, but as she took her bows you couldn't help but wish you could go up to her, give her a good shake and say 'WAKE UP!!'

My room mate went to see her when she was in Kansas City and ended up leaving early. Apparently she didn't fit into her costumes and just walked around on stage like she was going through the motions and you could definitely tell she was lip synching. Yes, we all know she doesn't sing but she could at least try. I'm rooting for her so I hope she snaps out of whatever funk she is in because she used to be entertaining and perform well.

I don't know what people expect from someone who is mentally ill. The fans are fortunate she's drugged up, otherwise she'd have to have someone shadowing her, propping her up so she doesn't fall over.

Bad reviews? Really? The BBC, while they said she didnt give it her all, said it was still an amazing show.

The Times said it perfectly, and made the best quote I've heard about her show: "If she did mime, perhaps it didn’t matter. After all, don’t mime artists also belong in a circus?"

The Daily Mail, as well, gave her a great review. So what does all of this mean? I'll put it simply: Britney is an entertainer. She gives all of us a show. Why your jokes come from her demise, its always been like that.

Yeah, she lip-syncs. But fans arent going to hearher sing. No, that doesnt make us stupid. We go to experience Britney doing what made her famous - putting on a show. We arent going for flawless dance moves, for top notch singing. We're going because we have loved and have grown up with Britney. And the fact that she still goes on stage every night, getting bad reviews from some and harsh words from critics, is extraordinary.

I dont care what your views on her are, because no matter what you say about me or her, its not gonna nudge my status as a fan. While her die-hard fans aren't in hundreds of millions, her overall fanbase stretches through lots of people. People hate her personal life and things she done in the past, but would blast her song if it came on the radio.

As to those mistakes she's made in her life, so? Are you too perfect to admit you've made mistakes. Britney has, and she's over it. So why can't you guys? Yeah, peoples lives might have been influenced by her choices. But what does that have to do with you? None of you know her, and none of you know the people in her life that she's had a personal influence on, so why do YOU care?

Posted by: Anonymous

to do with you? You dont know the people she's influenced, and you sure as hell dont know her. So why do YOU give a damn about anything she does? Afterall, for someone who is "untalented, a slob, a slut" and "washed-up", you all sure do seem to hound her posts just so you can say something mean...

Fans, Critics Split over Britney's London Gig
By Simon Perry
Originally posted Thursday June 04, 2009 08:00 AM EDT

Remixed music and super-sexy new outfits gave U.K. fans of Britney Spears a treat Wednesday night.

But the critics were less than unanimous in their reactions to the initial gig in the European leg of her Circus tour under a perfect big top – London's tented O2 Arena, where Michael Jackson will stage his comeback concerts in July.

At least Spears pronounced herself happy, tweeting on her official Web site, "Just wrapped my first show in London. I love all the remixed tracks and new costumes!"

Posted by: people.com

The updated tracks included "Baby One More Time" and "Womanzier," which served as a raunchy encore, with Spears playing provocative policewoman to boss her prone dancers.

The show saw her cut in half in a classic illusion, play the master of ceremonies in the three-ring circus and perform – often in skimpy underwear – while suspended from the ceiling. But it wasn't until about 40 minutes into the highly choreographed act that she demonstrated any verbal interaction with the crowd, hollering, "What's up London? How are you guys feeling tonight?" before singing the ballad "Everytime" to a rousing rapture from the estimated 20,000 fans.

Posted by: people.com

Critical Reaction

Afterwards, the best-selling Sun tabloid, under the headline "All A Brit Dull," called Spears "completely uninspiring … A girl walking around, flicking her hair and miming to some average pop songs."

The Daily Mirror's gossips, the 3am girls, however, loved "Britney's Sexy Circus," saying "Anyone … expecting a new wholesome-as-mom's-apple-pie image are in for a rude awakening. A very rude one!"

The Guardian was less enamored, saying "there's something unsexy about all of it, possibly because there's something weirdly characterless about the woman at its centre," while the Daily Mail, noting some of her well-documented troubles, praised Spears for staging of one of pop's most "remarkable comebacks."

Posted by: people.com

Daily Telegraph rock writer Neil McCormick writes: "Lipsynced, autotuned and double tracked, her vocals are as unashamedly pre-recorded as her backing tracks," calling it "the most perfectly plastic pop show ever staged."

The Circus tour – Spears's first in five years – began in New Orleans in March. She is set to remain in London for another seven dates and will also perform in Manchester before heading to Dublin, Paris and Scandinavia for a series of scheduled performances through summer.

Britney Spears Gets Remixes, Mixed Reviews For London Circus Stop
Published by Jocelyn Vena on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at 1:46 pm.

Britney Spears has taken her Circus across the pond and kicked off the European leg of her tour Wednesday night at London’s O2 Arena. But instead of just bringing over the same tour she had Stateside, the singer has some new song remixes of old favorites and some new looks as well.

According to her Web site some of the remixed tracks include “Baby One More Time,” “Do Something,” “Piece of Me,” “I’m a Slave 4 U” and “Womanizer.” After the show, Britney Tweeted excitedly, “Just wrapped my first show in London. I love all the remixed tracks and new costumes!”

Although we’re sure Spears’ loyal fans loved the show, the same can’t be said of some of her critics. The reviews are in, and some professional concertgoers described it as dull. The Sun said of Brit’s performance, “Madonna is twice her age and does double the dancing.”

Posted by: MTV Newsroom

Meanwhile, the Guardian made this point about the show: “It’s not really about music, it’s about gossip. … Certainly there are moments when Spears could no more obviously be miming were she wearing white-face makeup and pretending to walk against the wind.”

But the reviews weren’t all bad. The Daily Mail said the performance was “relentlessly high octane and superbly choreographed,” adding that the show is part of Britney’s “remarkable comeback.”

“[Y]ou don’t come to see Spears for live, sweaty, musical grit and authenticity,” the Daily Telegraph’s reviewer wrote. “She is the queen of production line pop and reclaims that diamanté crown with the most perfectly plastic pop show ever staged.” And we guess that’s a good thing.

The British aren't stupid. They can see a rip off, it doesn't take a genius to figure that out. Britney's "performances" are a rip off.

I don't think she's "bipolar." I think she's just stupid, uneducated, morally corrupt, immature for her age, and just plain dumb.

i went last night in London and it was amazing! she did not stop dancing for a second and really gave it her all. some people just enjoyed watching her life go out of control last year and think thats far more entertaining than her being sucessful. Very petty

She really is. I mean, having over 100 million dollars, a hit tour, a succesful comeback album, and legions of fans is something only stupid people have haha. I completely agree!

That's completely ridiculous at you guys only posting the hating reviews. There were more positive reviews than negative ones. Shows once again how some of you just can't let Britney win at anything. Always trying to push her down.

Posted by: Anonymous

So Slutney actually believes the Queen would meet with her?! Who does this air head think she is? ROFL (I think I'm going to split a gut laughing) ahahahaha

can't sing

LOSER @ 1:46 The only one who PUSHED HER DOWN was her pap bf when he wanted a BLOW JOB from BRAIN DEAD UNFIT BRIT SHIT!!! The Sun, BBC, Daily Mirror, Guardian, Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail, Metro are all *REPEAT* all on this page & all *REPEAT* all ripped her lousy all lipping no dance fake concert. She never wins because THE LOSER IS A *MENTALLY ILL FREAK SHOW* something point at & laugh. She's an *EPIC FAIL* LIKE YOOOOOOOOOOOOU!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous

Mentally defective slutney f*cked others. Shrinks locked her in the nut ward. The law gave daddy a choke collar and leash. Now bad karma’s anally raping the bitch. It must suck to be a 27 y/o grounded like a tween. She can’t even drive her car to the beach alone. Karma’s a bitch!

Oh X17 retards, how I grow to love thee. If you're going to say that Britney got bad reviews from these people, prove it. I've read all the reviews she's gotten. Yeah, there are some harsh ones. But there are good ones. Even harsh ones commend her music, and some who hated the show said it was one of the biggest pop spectales ever seen.

Yeah, she's gotten bad reviews. But getting a mixed reaction from critics doesnt mean its a flop. For those of you idiots that dont know, mixed means both good and bad. Her tour has gotten MIXED reviews, not BITTER, BAD, or NEGATIVE reviews. Some of you need to get that through your thick skulls.

Say what you want about her, but she's not going anywhere. And while you sit here and make fun of her, she's out traveling the world, being adorned by thousands of her fans ALMOST EVERY NIGHT! More people will love and adore my beloved "Shitney" more than anyone will ever love and adore you.

Posted by: YANKING SHITNEY'S LEASH

Suuuuuuuuure the media loves the show. Acrobats, clowns they love all of it except for the brain damaged twat who lips songs and can’t dance anymore. She can't even do interviews, promos or say more than a few words to the audience without a script b/c she's brain damaged. Daddy has her on a tight leash so she can't spend the money she gets from slutty tweens and queer queen fans. He needs the money to put her in a crazy ward when it's over.

Britney is a fat ugly whore with no talent
and she looks like a man. She has the legs and neck of a linebacker.

Posted by: Anonymous

what is 100 million dollars if your are insane and can't even SPEND it how you wish? Being watched by a team to keep your shit together, taking psych pills and being reminded 4 times a day that you have 2 sons isn't a great life....it's an existance.

Posted by: Anonymous

Zoo animals have more freedom than she does in her cage. They can hang out with hairy friends without bodyguards, nannies and such listening in on calls and searching bags like her daddy orders them to do to her. Like seriously, if some one went in my bag, I'd break there fingers with a hammer. He keeps her under a micro scope like a fungus. I'd rather live in a zoo than be her.

Posted by: Anonymous

The two morons who gave her that phone are lucky her father didn't send someone to use a hammer on their heads!

The hoards of girls in fancy dress screamed and danced their way through every song; with a show this huge it was nearly impossible to hate Britney for miming, it was simply too fun to watch and dance along to. It’s indulgent, decadent and ridiculous; it will certainly never change musical history but when Britney is wrapped around a semi-naked man on a trapeze 50 foot in the air, singing about masturbation we will always love her.

That pretty much sums up how we as fans feel. We arent going to hear her sing, but to have fun and hear the songs we love. Its a performance to me, not a concert. She has fun, we have fun, and thats all that matters to us.

12:36 I have read every major newspaper review of the tour. In my opinion, some reviews lavished too much praise (which seemed like pity) and others were too harsh (which seemed like punishment). Clearly, Britney is not singing/dancing in a live concert. Your review of the show was the most honest and balanced! You cast Britney as a performance artist appearing in extravagant stage show. I’m glad you enjoyed Britney’s performance. Very nice review!

I am not a fan of her music. I have been more interested in the gradual transformation in her personal life. I have been waiting (and hoping) she would become an attentive and nurturing mother to her children. That her children would become a consistent priority and she would learn to appreciate her ex-husband and parents. I think she has finally reached a calmer place in her life and is making progress. I’m glad for Britney and her family. I posted Britney’s Hello! and More! magazine interviews in the ‘Brit’s Boys Dance to Toxic’ thread. I also included information about the WEG lawsuit settlement.

I understand you and other fans enjoy her performances but I still hope she retires (or at least semi-retires) after the tour. I think she could use some quiet time with her family and friends.

Posted by: eman

Oh and 'Pink Wig Britney' was often outrageously funny! I am confident her children prefer their mother without the pink wig. I think most people who followed her story feel the same way. I know I do.

Damn! I thought Helen Lawrence’s full review was posted on another thread. Oh well, I must have been thinking about a different site. Here it is:

Londonist Review: Britney Spears @ The O2

2:48, I agree and I'm glad you liked what I wrote. When britney first started, she woudl dance well at times and sing live and I wish she'd return to that. I want her to be a mom full-time. I think if she and her kids reach a great place, everything will be better. Her music will reach the level we fans have wanted. We want her to make an album like she did for "In the Zone". She wrote a lot of the songs, and the singles spawned world-wide hits.

I think people who make fun of her have every right to. But I just wish it would stop. Its hard to be a fan of someone who people make fun of or critisize. But, thats still not gonna stop me from listening to her music. That is something that people on this site need to know. Call her what you want, make fun of us fans, but we're still gonna love her.

Posted by: eman

Thanks 3:55 Try not to take this place to heart. I think most of what is written here is intended to get a rise out of someone who feels passionately (love/hate). If someone writes something that bothers you, don’t let them know because they will probably do it repeatedly. Remember - Don’t let them get your goat!

We all have different taste in music and different things make us laugh. It’s better (and more fun) to respond to something you don’t like with your own joke. Shortly after she was released from the UCLA, someone said Britney’s father should do underwear checks before she left the house. She looked very fragile. I didn’t think it was funny. So I responded with a funny comment. I said, Oh really?! Hmmm...who is doing YOUR underwear checks? People laughed and it made me smile.

Consider this: I wish Britney would take a professional driving course because she’s a terrible driver BUT maybe I’m wrong. Maybe she deliberately drove over the paparazzo’s foot because he was wearing on her last nerve! The video showed her quickly put her hand over her mouth to hide a smile, we heard a semi-sincere - sorry ya’ll - but maybe what we didn’t see was her laughing her ass off driving down the road. The visual imagery works with or without the pink wig. ;)

12:36 pm
You mean Slutney sings about masturbation in her sleazy shows? Eewww.....what a ho. She's probably singing about what she does since she's manless.........hahahaha

Posted by: eman

11:01 why don't you ask Londonist music critic, Helen Lawrence. She wrote the review you didn’t read.

Posted by: eman

Oh never mind. This will be more fun.

Britney has been singing ‘Touch of my Hand’ for years.

Frankie says Relax!

Blogger jailed in Anna Nicole Smith defamation suit
By Kate Murphy – 6 days ago

HOUSTON, Texas (AFP) — A real estate agent in Houston who blogged about Anna Nicole Smith was jailed for contempt last week in a defamation case brought by the late Playboy model's mother.

Legal experts said bloggers are increasingly the targets of such litigation, which are testing the bounds of free speech.

Posted by: AFP

Lyndal Harrington, who is accused of helping to spread falsehoods that Virgie Arthur married her stepbrother and abused Smith as a child, spent four nights in jail after she failed to comply with a court order to turn over her computer.

The 53-year-old grandmother claimed her computer was stolen during a burglary less than a week after it was subpoenaed.

A police officer testified that he believed the theft was staged and judge Tony Lindsay ordered Harrington to produce the computer by July 2 or she will again face incarceration.
Harrington says she is shocked that she is being sued for comments posted on someone else's blog to pass the time.

Posted by: AFP

"I just voiced my opinion," said Lyndal Harrington of her posts about Smith and Arthur on the website "Rose Speaks."

Like many bloggers, Harrington doesn't consider herself a publisher and did not realize she could be held liable for her posts.

"I got into this because my business had fallen apart in this economy and it was something to do," she told AFP. "I developed a lot of friendships with women who are retired or ill at home."

Posted by: AFP

Three other bloggers are named in the suit along with Smith's former companion, Howard K. Stern, and Larry Birkhead, the father of her daughter, Dannielynn.

Arthur alleges that the defendants conspired to defame her so she wouldn't get custody of Dannielynn, who could inherit up to 88 million dollars.

"Lyndall Harrington is a liar who faked a burglary," said Neil McCabe who represents Arthur.

"She's part of a conspiracy to defame my client and she's done her own defaming of my client."

Lawsuits against bloggers in the United States have been doubling every year since 2004 with 15 million dollars in judgments so far against them, according to Robert Cox, president of the Media Bloggers Association.

"A lot of bloggers think of themselves as individuals or maybe writers but in the courts, they are considered a publisher," Cox said.

Posted by: AFP

His organization has created an on-line course with Harvard Law School, City of New York School of Journalism and News University at the Poynter Institute at Northwestern University to educate bloggers about their legal rights and responsibilities.

"A lot of these cases could have been avoided if things had been worded just a little differently or if they had double sourced their information," Cox said.

"Most of the time, these people are not trained journalists."

The spike in suits is due in part to the burgeoning number of bloggers.

About 175,000 new blogs are created every day according to Technorati, a blog search engine.

Posted by: AFP

But it also has to do with people's growing obsession with controlling their on-line reputations and new technologies that allow them to do it.

"With Google alerts and rss feeds, it's a lot easier to monitor what's being said about you," said Sam Bayard, assistant director of the Citizen Media Law Project at Harvard University.

Moreover, the technology exists to find anonymous bloggers.

Posted by: AFP

"People can find you," said Cox at the Media Blogger Association, which this year began offering its members legal expenses insurance for an annual fee of 540 dollars for 100,000 dollars of coverage.

The majority of cases against bloggers are for defamation but they are also frequently sued for copyright infringement and invasion of privacy.

"There's this Wild West mentality where people think they can do anything on the Web and not be held liable," said Bayard.

Posted by: AFP

While state laws vary on what constitutes defamation and who qualifies as a journalist and thus who can protect sources, Bayard said, judges have consistently applied the same standards to blogs as they would any other medium of expression.

"Defamation is defamation no matter whether it is written on paper or on a blog," he said.

One of these days one of the Cheetolings will ask her 'Mommy, why do you need a baby sitter too?'

And by reposting all that, you could be sued by the AFP.
