New Moon Lives Up To Its Expectations

twilovers.jpgimage courtesy of Summit Entertainment

And then some!

Last night I caught a screening of New Moon here in Hollywood, and while the film hasn't been getting the best reviews, I loved it and I thought it was everything it needed to be.

Of course, the chemistry between Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart was electric from the start, but Taylor Lautner definitely had the surprise card up his sleeve! Half of the audience squealed with delight upon the first sighting of Jacob Black's chiseled abs, and the response was equally as deafening when we caught a glimpse of Edward Cullen's sparkly goodness a little bit later.

While there wasn't nearly enough Edward in New Moon, there was a reason for that and I definitely felt Bella's pain when she pined for her lover. Speaking of Bella, can I just say how gorgeous Kristen looked? She wore very minimal makeup, and there are numerous scenes where she's supposed to be worn out and depressed, yet she still looked stunning! It's easy to see why Rob can't keep his hands off of her, and I'm happy to report that there was a lot more smooching between the lovebirds in this installment of the Twilight franchise.

So what else did I love? Dakota Fanning was a fantastic and deliciously evil Jane Volturi, and Michael Sheen's take on Aro Volturi was just as impressive. Ashley Greene's Alice is the vampire I'd most like to be friends with, and I'm going to download the soundtrack as soon as I'm done writing this blog. Yeah, it was that good!

So what's NOT to love about the movie? For one, the CGI on the wolves was a bit laughable, but if you're a true Twilover and you're caught up in the movie, it almost doesn't even matter. The plot took off rather rapidly during the third act, and there were a few points where the dialogue made me cringe, but that happens with just about every movie so I'm not going to get too picky. New Moon isn't supposed to be an Oscar contender, it's supposed to be a huge blockbuster with a die hard fan following. If its midnight ticket sales on Thursday are any indication of the numbers it's going to pull this weekend, it's safe to say that this is THE biggest movie of the year. Nice work, guys. I give it a B-plus.

UPDATE!
New Moon has broken the record for highest opening-day gross ever! Summit Entertainment is reporting that New Moon earned $72.7 million on Friday, topping The Dark Knight’s previous record of $67.2 million.

Have you seen it yet? Thoughts?

Do you mean it lived up to "its" expectations? "It's" is a contraction for "it is."

I give it a C-, Taylor has so much chemistry with Kristen in this one, and Rob looks and acts like he is Kristen's grandpa.
It was an awful movie, It was like going to a funeral.

OKAY...I SAW IT THIS MORNING...AND I MUST SAY I AGREE W/ THE ABOVE COMMENT...I'M SORRY BUT ROB'S ACTING IS A BIT "WOODEN" THEY SHOW A PREVIEW OF HIS NEWEST ONE..AND HE IS SORT OF THE SAME IN IT!! PERHAPS HE JUST NEEDS TO GET HIS CHOPS....BUT I THINK THE REAL STAR OF IT ALL WAS KIRSTEN...SHE REALLY IS ETHEREAL..IN IT....IF SHE PICKS THE RIGHT PROJECTS....THAT GIRL IS GOING TO BE MAJOR!!....ALL IN ALL I'D GIVE IT A B-!!!

Posted by: Anonymous

SORRY....I MEANT KRISTEN!!! OOPS!!

Posted by: Anonymous

I LOVED IT! KRISTEN WAS AMAZING! THEY ALL WERE! CANT WAIT FOR ECLIPSE

Posted by: Anonymous

Great review! I'm glad someone who isn't jaded saw the movie and enjoyed it for its intended purpose. Which is to take you on a fantasy ride and make you fall in love with these characters. You made me want to go see it but I'll wait until the die-hard fans have gotten enough. Keep up the good work! Thx!

i dont understand how people say new moon is WAAAY better than twilight, for me are just the same, there's no great fight scene like the james-cullen in twilight or a great fx scene. the only part i liked about new moon is the part about the Werewolf clan, but the movie, not so good, please stop saying is greatt, excelent, beyond borders when is not, is just a movie okay, the movie is selling 10 tickets per second or something like that but that's because the fans who are obsessed with robert pattinson not because is an excelent movie. i said.

Posted by: Anonymous

I THINK ECLIPSE WILL BE EVEN BETTER....THAT ONE HAS TONS MORE ACTION IN IT AND A LOT OF VOLTURI AND VICTORA....I DO THINK THE AGI...WAS WEAK AND LAUGHABLE THOUGH...I MEAN COME ON!!!

Posted by: James

Wow, someone doesn't even speak basic English - ITS EXPECTATIONS - you morons!!!

I like Kristen Stewart but I thought she was horrible in this movie, especially with the long pauses and hesitations with each line delivered. If they just picked up the pace, they probably could have cut the movie down by 30 minutes. The dialogue between her and Edward was painful to watch, they were acting as if they were waiting for an asthma attack to set it, their breathing was so laborous. Also, I hope they do not make Breaking Dawn. (Spoiler
) How will they have Jacob imprint on Reneesme on screen without it seeming like something incestuous?

Posted by: Anonymous

Haven't seen it yet, but am looking forward to it.

And NO, I'm not a teeny-booper, but I enjoy a good romance since it's hard to have a good romance with guys in real life.

I think the movie was amaziing. It was wayyyyyyyyyyyy better than Twilight. they put more stuff from the book in the movie than they did in twilight. In Twilight the added a little to much but in new moon they added just right. I give it an A- dont lie it was good.n What made the movie even better Taylor Lautner was in it. You can not compair Robert Patterson to Taylor Launter, Taylor would win hands down. And Taylors body is wayyyyyyyyyyyy better than Robs. But I cant wait till June 30th Ecplise will be amazing too!

She's a shitty actress...her woe is me crap came off as over dramatic and really cheesy. I can't believe how many people think she was so great in this movie.

I think the movie was good overall, especially if you are a fan of the books.
however, i think the movie did not do jacob justice, they should have added some more jacob "the selfless good friend" in there. also i think someone needs to tell kristen to enunciate so we can actually understand what she is saying (she's so irritating and arrogant).
I agree that the wolf CGI was badly done. I think they should have showed the wolves in a more concealed manner.

I give it an 8 out of 10, but if you have not read the book you may think it deserves a lower rating.

Count me among the midnight vampire watching hordes. I have to say New Moon was much closer to the book than Twilight was. Unlike Twilight, that hacked the book into an unrecognizable shell of a movie, there were a few scenes added for the Hollywood joy of it, but they made no inpact on the final outcome. I look forward to seeing more of Dakota Fanning as Jane. I also agree that they CGI needs some fine tuning. Count me among those who give this one a thumbs up.

well, if you are a true fan of the books--then you will love the movie. I I only wish the movie had been longer.
They did a gret job capturing the feel of the books.

What a Disappointment!!!! I am a hardcore fan of the books and of the movie. Actually, I was a fan of the movie first and after that I became a fan of the books. I loved the first movie, and I believed that the actors performances were great in the first one. The second movie was another story, I wasn't happy with it at all. The vampires looked like clowns, their faces were too powdery white, but the worst were the yellow eyes that simply made their eyes look expressionless. I love Edward's character, but he simply looked like a freak show. The chemistry between him and Bella was weak, and way more powerful and building between Jacob and Bella. There were so many scenes that were hurried in at the end, very important scenes between Edward and Bella. I think the director, that seems to be overly appreciated by the actors forgot that the movie is about the strong feelings that Edward and Bella feel for each other. The focus shouldn't have been the introduction of the love triangle ,but the supernatural love that Edward and Bella feel for each other. You got it all wrong director.

For people who have never liked the book series and didn't like the first movie then why would you even bother to see the sequel? What, so you can make your crappy comments to the world? Well those of us who love the series and the movie, actors, storyline, etc ... don't want to hear your lame opinions on what you obviously don't understand or even like in the first place. There is a chemistry and an ageless draw to this story despite your comments and there are many more fans than you can imagine, so your negative comments mean nothing to the rest of us. I thought this movie was done better, a higher quality, more polished. There were Subtle improvements also, from the intense gold eyes of the Cullens to Edwards diamond sparkling skin. Contrary to other opinions, I thought Kristen's performance was much better in this film and Alice(Ashley) was simply stunning. The new director and possibly a bigger budget was probably a factor in the improvements. I was only disappointed on two counts. One being the missing scene where Bella looks for those photos and other tangile reminders of her life with Edward. They lead you up to it but never showed the scene, which would have the completed that part of the book that I felt was important. Another thing that I thought could have been done better, was after Bella's near drowning, there was no scene of her choking up any water which would have looked more realistic. The wolves may have been a bit overdone but they were supposed to be werewolves and who knows how they are supposed to look. Everyone has their own ideas and I thought they looked as realistic as possible. I loved the movie and I will undoubtedly Love the remaining sequels! I could and will watch them over and over. They make me laugh, cry and forget my own troubles. I am enthralled each time and isn't that what good entertainment is all about?

WOW-HELLO!!!THIS WASNT SUPPOSED TO BE A TOP NOTCH ECONIC FILM,IT IS SUPPOSED TO PUT THE CHARACTERS AND PLOT OF THE BOOKS TO LIFE(VISUALLY).A- I GIVE IT. THE MUSIC WASNT GOOD AT ALL.GCI WAS OK BUT NOT HORRIBLE.CHEMISTRY WAS STILL AWKWARD,UNDERSTANDABLE IN TWILIGHT, BUT NOT IN THIS ONE.I STILL LOVED IT,IT FOLLOWED THE BOOK ALMOST TO THE T.AMAZING....LAUTNER/PATTINSON "KEEP THOSE BODS" I WOULD SO ROCK THOSE JOCKS.IM 30(A HOT 30)SO I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT THE YOUNG GALS WERE THINKING!! "KRISTEN "HELL, I WOULD ROCK U TOO" :)

I was incredibly disappointed with the ending. They left out some incredible stuff from the book that should have been in the movie. Not enough Jacob? Please. They could have taken out a few minutes of his shirtless scenes & add more to the reunion & subsequent Edward/Bella discussions. The ending of book really showed the feelings between E/B & the movie just rushed over it. This was not just a J/B book. Big fail on that.

To all the people who are TYPING IN ALL CAPS, tone it down a notch. I remember when the government ok'd the fluoridation of our water and there was hysteria that it was a Communist plot to poison the nation. Well, as ridiculous as I found all that, I'm not so sure now that crazy hasn't been added to our water system. Or is it that other 1960's rumored plot, subliminal messages, telling people that New Moon is greeeat, the acting is greeat and this is the BEST MOVIE EVER. All I've got to say is, thank god for independent films.

Posted by: Anonymous

I agree with 8:16. the cullen's eyes really bothered me. edward is meant to have warm eyes like liquid topaz, not freakishly yellow cat eyes. They looked much nicer in twilight, more subtle vampire look, like in the book

How come if anyone disagrees with what is posted, it's always "why do you waste your time posting that if you hate it" Well it's my right you loser and how is it wasting my time? You just wasted your time responding to a comment because you are an average boring person who has no opinion. G o watch Twilight and catch the midnight showing of New Moon honey.

Best movie ever!!!You have to really know and love the books to appreciate the movie. I think that New Moon was alot better than the Twilight movie, more from the book than Twilight. I loved it. Kristian Stewart didn't quite pull off the heartache as well as Bella in the book, i just dont think she pulled her part off well at all, but Robert on the other hand, his maturity is there for a reason (he is 100+yoa.)He was in some parts too imature in Twilight. Great Job Rob!!!!Taylor did an awesome acting job. He is a natural. The movie all and all was a big hit... hope Eclipse is even better.

Posted by: Anonymous

Forgot to also mention to 9:33, Robert Pattinson is ugly and Kristen Stewart should have her SAG card taken away....just wasting time here, all night

Posted by: Travis

The only thing that is for certain is this director did a million times better at capturing the essence of the books, and making the speed scenes believable (Remember Edward climbing the trees and running with bella in the first one? yea.) This director gets it. I'm sad he is being replaced for eclipse.

I had no interest in seeing these films until the Vatican/ Pope said something about them being " a moral vacuum" and generally bad- now I want to see them....

Posted by: Kat

I agree with 9:06...New Moon is so much more than a Jacob and Bella book; it's in New Moon that we really learn the extent of Edward and Bella's feelings for one another, and I think the movie glazed over that too much. I knew the movie would be different, but they really underplayed the E/B reunion at the end (and the whole E/B relationship in general!), which made me really disappointed. And the last line? Really out of context IMO, but I guess they had to set up Eclipse somehow.

I for one thought that Kristen did an amazing job...SO MUCH better than Twilight. I got a sense of everything "Bella," her depression, anxiety, awkwardness, and inquisitiveness, and I think KStew pulled it off nicely. I didn't really like Rob though, he seemed constipated the entire time! Taylor was laughable...sorry, but the kid can't really act. The scene in the rain? Fail, even more than Pattinson's constipated look, lol.

Palin for president? OMG I think that I would rather live in the sewers with the rats... Then we'd all have a reason to commit suicide before she would destroy the world. She is the stupidest most pathetic excuse for a female politician I have ever seen. It makes me ashamed of my gender! Obama has more class in his little toe than she does in her entire empty head!

GARBAGE!
that's all i have to say.

I knew it this is all an shit marketting stuff to get more money, and they did.And no quality...
when i saw the first trailer on mtv homepage some weeks ago,i thold ,Rob is soo sucks,he cannot act.I mean ,the fame bugs his head. But i see the fans reacts after watched the NM, Kristen too have the same fame bulshit problem.I thold you ppl.Dont Waste youre time for this cheap Twilight Saga .
The movie get many bad critcs, from very important news papers as Los Angeles Times,Rolling Stone,Boston Globe etc.
Peps Weak up,and go read Shakespears .
Dont buy all shits from this huge miserable industry, named Saga.
Oh and btw,The books of Stephenie and the movie should be restricted only for 17 over years old and not under.
Jesus, i am so proud im living in Europe ,far from this all....
this was my last post

Posted by: kirkedd

I was disappointed with this movie. I thought the vampire make-up made them look unattractive. and the eyes were too distracting... They looked more over the top - how are they supposed to blend into society like they do? Kristen Stewart's acting was more mopey than anything. Why doesn't she ever cry? She should, at some point, been a blubbering mess! They certainly should have dubbed her screaming from nightmares. Like nails on a chalkboard. I was surprised at Taylor Lautner's performance. I thought he did a pretty good job. For all the hype about the courtyard scene near the end, I thought they would have lingered more on some big money shots. But it was very fast and not as dramatic as I thought it would be. And the music is BLAH.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!1BEST MOVIE EVER!!I RECOMMEND IT FOR EVERY AGE

awesome movie, huge fan. team jacob all the way. bella worse minimal makeup? im sorry but what the hell are you on? as a professional makeup artist i can assure you that bella worse tons of make up.. they just wanted it to LOOK natural

Pattinson seems to resent being in the movie, and things in general.

i saw the movie last night, and I LOVED IT! it was so good!

Posted by: Anonymous

CGI is computer generated imagery. It is the technology that was used to produce the werewolves and the cliff diving scenes in New Moon. I was disappointed on both counts. The water and the divers entry both looked fake. The wolves movements seemed off as well. I just took my daughter to it today, she LOVED it! It was my second go around and I have to say I'll be buying this one for my ever expanding collection!

TO HATERS,

WHY WASTE MONEY ON THIS STUFF??? I THOUGH YOU KNOW BETTER?!

uh-duh!

Posted by: Anonymous

I agree with November 22, 2009 6:43 AM.

it's the haters who make this saga number one because at first, they wanted to see the movie at of curious. then, they didn't understand what they saw because they didn't read the book (probably because it was too long). and so, that makes them become haters.

haters, if you don't understand why there are such craziness over this saga, well then, all i can do is to share with you a quote from Little Prince, "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. What is essential is invisible to the eye."
