Oprah's Message to Montecito Fire Victims

MontecitoFire01.jpgOprah Winfrey OprahHouseFire.jpgMassive wildfires continue to rage through the steep hillsides near Oprah's home in Montecito, California.

As of Friday afternoon, more than 80 homes had been destroyed and hundreds of acres charred.

On her talk show Friday, Oprah sent a message to those affected by the blaze.

"All our prayers are with all the folks and neighbors in Santa Barbara. Hope you're well today. And those of you who lost your homes, our hearts go out to you."

According to fire officials, Oprah's property has not been damaged by the fire.

Rob Lowe, who also lives in the area, called into show. He told a harrowing tale of trying to escape the flames.

"We got in the car, pulled out of the driveway and the entire mountain behind us was flames, 200 feet high, shooting into the air...This thing came on so fast, you just can't believe it."

"I'm very lucky," he continued. "My house is fine. Although I'm looking—I'm talking to you right now and I'm looking out of my office and I can see the smoke billowing still..."

"I've lived out here since 1976 and seen a lot of fires, but last night...I mean, I watched 12, 13 homes burn to the ground. It's so tragic. It's so sad. And this is the worst I have ever seen by far," Lowe said.

The actor later told KABC-TV his home was ultimately spared, but as they left, the wind was blowing at 70 miles an hour and "it was just like Armageddon."

Both Lowe's and Winfrey's homes are less than a mile from many of the homes destroyed in the blaze, and Winfrey's 42-acre estate is within several hundred yards of the mandatory evacuation zone.

Many other celebrities have homes in the area, including Michael Douglas, Ellen DeGeneres, Jeff Bridges and Kevin Costner.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Montecito and Santa Barbara and well as the brave firefighters working so hard to save people's homes.

not to be mean or anything but i rather have a celebrities house burn to the ground as long as no one is hurt who have more than one home than a middle class person who only has one home that has everything they own

Armageddon is right california is paying for their sinful ways .....attacking people of faith and churches

Posted by: Anonymous

She should invite her neighbors to move into her house. It's so damn big she could have 50 people living there and them not run into each other for a year!

Posted by: Pro-GOD, Anti-religion

Oh please, 2:32pm. The Church has attacked people maliciously since they first came into existence. Anyone that thinks any bit differently than them, and off they go. They might not be able to get away with the actual MURDER they used to get away with but they still have to stick their noses in everyone else's business.

That said, the Mormon church should have their IRS exemption revoked for sticking their nose into a political vote. Apparently the separation of church and State that our forefathers thought to set forth in our country is being haughtily disregarded by them. Stop using God's name to be assholes and maybe the rest of us would like you better.

Attacking little old ladies and spitting on her does not help your GAY cause.

Oprah needs to explain her racist ties and anti american church.

PEOPLE! A lot more than celebrities have lost their homes in this fire. And your HIDEOUS bickering about Prop 8 is totally displaced and disrespectful. Get a grip! and let's all hope for the best for people who are living thru this fire nightmare.

What an arrogant, racist, snob-I mean cow. They have insurance- who cares? Hey, Oprah, the world doesnt give a crap about your oversized, ego mansion you big mouthed fake.

Posted by: Anonymous

Poor, rich Oprah, as the country is filled with people getting thrown out of their 2000sq ft homes by the banks- Boohoo you are in danger of losing your 50 million dollar mansion (1 of many)such a self absorbed, moron. What nerve, to devote her show to her rich, out of touch with reality neighbors with 5 homes each. Boohoo......

She spent more money on buying Obama the White House than she spent on this house.

Posted by: Anonymous

As appealing as living in southern California is, especially during long east coast winters, at least the snow melts. I'll take this side of the country any day over all that shit Californians have to deal with - wild fires, earthquakes, mudslides, droughts, etc. California Nightmarin'!

Posted by: Anonymous

oprah's house is about 2 miles away from the fire, nowhere near the mandatory evacuation zone, lowe's house is about a 1/3 of a mile from the nearest burn area, i don't know where they get their info but it is way off.

Why is the internet filled with such angry people..

Who knew you could buy the Presidency in the US, especially with "foreign" money. Now Obama will stick his head in the sand while the CALIPHATE IS ESTABLISHED WORLD WIDE.

Posted by: East Coast

Sad,Sad,Angry people.
Seems those that are the angriest
are those that claim Christ on their side.
Always a witch hunt.
The crusades.
The inquisition.
The Salem "witches"
The communist blacklist during the fifties.
Now "Socialist Liberals".
And as for "buying" the Presidency,
the extreme "Christian" Right purchased
the last eight years,What nerve you have
to accuse others....sad,sad,sad

I can't help but wonder if we would be so unsympathetic if the community threatened by these fires were populated by Televangelists, after all, they live rather extravagant lifestyles. Or oil billionaires, there's more money in oil than in Hollywood. Or do we reserve our venom and bile for the "Hollywood Media Elite"? Hypochrites......

Posted by: Anonymous

The "haters" who posted here are truly sick and obsessed.
As a Christian, I resent the fact that some are using religion as an excuse for this sewage-spewing.
If that's the example they give, I'm not surprised that atheism is on the rise.

Posted by: east coast

as a christian you must be willing to stand for christian values. and speak against those things that go against christian morals such as aboration, gay & lesbian marrage, prayer in school etc. now there is a line that you can cross that takes it to far. but We as christians must be willing to fight for our belifs, becouse the other side will and has spoken for what they beleave and each time they win we as christians lose and you may not see it now but you children will.

Oprah named her place "The Promised Land". That's a bit pretencious. It sounds like she thinks she is God. Now, we have The Promised Land and Neverland. Wonder what the next arrogant celeb will call their excesses... Golden Gates? Heavens Bliss? or Angelland? I wouldn't be surprised. These spoiled celebs are really screwed up. Perhaps Oprah needs to pay Dr. Phil a visit.

These comments are very disheartening. It is truly dispicable. Who cares about Her assets? What ever Oprah has is "hers". You people are simply hateing. This woman is in jeopardy of loosing the place she call's "home". We all have items in our homes that are irreplaceable. Have some compassion. So what if she can buy fifty more. It is still a loss. Imagine your feelings if you lost or were about to loose your home and everything in it. You only have the close on your back. It's not an imagination for me. I'VE BEEN THERE; just three years ago. And I, my children, parents and siblings are still recovering. And insurance doesn't matter. Because there are things that insurance does not or cannot replace. It's mental torture as well. Can any of you handle running out of a burning house for your life then standing by watching all you own go up in smoke; literally burning to the ground; only after searching to assure that everyone got out safely? Can you picture yourself, wonderinig where you are going to sleep for the night and where your clothes will come from when you get up to get dress the next day? Never mind not having a change of clothes to sleep in. How about where you will get your children's uniforms and shoes from for school for the next morning... Have you even figured out where you are going to sleep your family for the night yet? I hope this nightmare ends for all those living it very soon. I don't wish that on anyone. We didn't do anything careless or wrong. The fire was starting inside the walls and no one could have known. Don't be so cruel. It could very easily be you. Even though you are all perfect. Just be careful what you wish on others and mock other about. To all those suffering from this loss, I wish you the very best; emotionally, financially, physically and spiritually. God Bless You All!!!

I wondered why so many media outlets were saying Michael Douglas lived there. I didn't think he had lived out there for years. His father owns a home in the Santa Barbara area, and there is a Michael J. Douglas on public record in Santa Barbara County, but that is Michael Keaton, not Kirk Douglas' son. Other "celebrity address" websites have made this mistake over the years thinking that Michael Keaton's house in Pacific Palisades on Napoli Drive was Michael Douglas'.
