The two-time Oscar and seven-time Golden Globe winner had this to say about the honor:

“I have to say that I was stunned, and when they sent me the roster of people in the academy I just burst into tears. I couldn’t believe that I’d be even allowed in the kitchen.”

As for what she expects to do as a member, Streep jokes: “I just hope to have lots of cocktails and talk about high-fallutin’ things.”

The academy describes its members with the following: Americans of great distinction in the arts whose work falls outside the traditional departments” of music (composition), literature and art.

Other members of this elite group include Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese.
