wyclef200.jpgLOS ANGELES, California (X17online) - Musician Wyclef Jean is no longer in the running to become Haiti's next president ... after withdrawing himself from the race.

The Haitian-born singer, 40, made the following statement:

"This was not an easy conclusion to reach; but it is one that was thoughtfully made, taking into account many, many competing factors and weighing the course that will best advance the healing of the country and help it find the quickest path to recovery."

Jean had announced his candidacy back in early August. However, the Provincial Electoral Council had disqualified him because according to Haitian law, the "candidate must reside in the country for at least five years," and the singer and his family have been living in New Jersey.

Jean's upcoming album If I Were President will hits stores in February 2011.
