The flick’s huge opening weekend exceeded tracking estimates by $20 million, stimulated by state-of-the-art special effects and an overwhelmingly positive critical reception.

"The combination of never-before-seen special effects combined with a powerful, emotional story made for a supremely satisfying experience at the movies," Fox senior vice president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson told the Hollywood Reporter.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes also fared well overseas, earning $23.4 million from 25 territories.

Universal's The Change-Up starring Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman had a disappointing opening weekend, coming in at No. 4 with $13.5 million in revenues.

Sony’s The Smurfs remained strong in its second weekend at No. 2, while Universal and DreamWorks’ Cowboys & Aliens trailed at No. 3.
