In addition, creator Shonda Rhimes received the group's Golden Gate Award during the ceremony in San Francisco due in part to her show's role in increasing the visibility and understanding of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Grey's Anatomy has featured several LGBT characters, including recently married lesbian couple Sara Ramirez (Callie) and Jessica Capshaw (Arizona).

Grey's beat out Degrassi (TeenNick), Pretty Little Liars (ABC Family), Shameless (Showtime) and Torchwood: Miracle Day (Starz), its first win in the category after being nominated in 2010 and 2011.
