We've been speculating for weeks that Britney Spears would be returning to the VMA stage, and now it seems the pop princess is one step closer to signing on.

Eonline reports that Britney filmed a promo with this year's host, Forgetting Sarah Marshall's Russell Brand (odd choice), in which the Brit actor/comedian asks the VMA veteran for advice about hosting the show.

During the promo, they also apparently ignore the elephant in the room -- literally. A source says, "there's also a 9,000-pound elephant in it, as in 'the elephant in the room.' "

We can't wait to see the promo, and are even more jazzed about a possible new Britney performance!!!
