Beckham's doctor, Sakari Orava, told reporters the operation today lasted just under an hour and that it went "very well." Beckham will have to rest for a month before beginning physical therapy and will have to wait at least four months before trying to run.

David posted on his website the solemn statement: "I hope to make a swift and full recovery."

Meanwhile, England's World Cup team soccer coach told reporters the injury was a "big blow" for Beckham, not mentioning how it would impact their country's bid for Cup champion. Back in Los Angeles, the Galaxy's coach, Bruce Arena, said in a statement: "David remains an important player for the Galaxy and we look forward to welcoming him back and assisting in his recovery."
