Mel Gibson's ex-girlfriend and the mother of his youngest child, Oksana Grigorieva, is being investigated for extortion after reportedly asking him to pay her $10 million not to release the tapes she eventually gave or sold to a tabloid.

After the tapes became public, Grigorieva sent a text message to Gibson, according to a story in the Hollywood Reporter, saying the reason she recorded him was because he "broke her agreement with [her]."

The report says a source claims there are additional emails that will likely be used by Gibson's attorney to prove the singer/songwriter wanted to reconcile with the actor. The Los Angeles Police Department's spokesperson Steve Whitmore, has confirmed there is an ongoing investigation but he would not provide more details.

Legal pundits were puzzled by Grigorieva's strategy at the former couple's last court hearing June 22. Her attorney, Manley Fried, failed to disclose to the judge that Gibson and his client had an existing $15 million settlement agreement. THR's source is quoted as saying, "Manley Freid's strategy accomplished nothing. It's all out there now. They pressed the nuclear button and Gibson is still basically standing. There's zero upside for Grigorieva in terms of money, custody and visitation."
