It's official ... Prince William is going to be a married man! Princess Diana's eldest son, 28, is engaged to girlfriend of eight years, Kate Middleton, 28 ... and the two are expected to tie the knot next year!

The royal family released the following statement:

    "The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton. The wedding will take place in the Spring or Summer of 2011, in London.

    Prince William and Miss Middleton became engaged in October during a private holiday in Kenya. Prince William has informed The Queen and other close members of his family. Prince William has also sought the permission of Miss Middleton’s father.

    Following the marriage, the couple will live in north Wales, where Prince William will continue to serve with the Royal Air Force."


The adorable couple met at St. Andrews University in Scotland. Royal watcher Katie Nicholl tells Us Weekly:

    "Kate wanted assurances from William. William told Kate she was The One, but he was not ready to get married. She...agreed to wait for him."


Many are predicting this could be the largest royal event since the 1981 wedding of Prince Charles and Diana.
