Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry told reporters at a Television Critics Association press event Sunday morning (junkets and conferences have taken place all weekend long for fall television news) that the eighth season would be the show's last.

"I wanted to go out when the network still saw us as a viable show and doing well in ratings," he said. "I've worked in TV for 23 years and I'm very aware of shows that overstay their welcome. I wanted to go out in the classiest way possible."

Cherry said he told the news to Eva Longoria, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross and Teri Hatcher on Friday. "The women knew it was a possibility—it wasn't such a shock," he added. Cherry said that they expressed their gratitude to him for the show.

But will Nicolette Sheridan, who Cherry did not get along with, be back at all in the final season? See what he said after the jump ...
