Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver's oldest daughter, 21, admitted to Harper's Bazaar that though the split has been hard, she's been taking comfort in her family. Katherine told the mag:
- "I really do believe everything happens for a reason. A lot of the time, it's hard to understand in the moment why things are happening, but I really do think that. I also like to think God doesn't really give you anything you can't handle."
Arnold and Maria tried very hard to keep their four kids - Katherine, Christina, 19, Patrick, 17, and Christopher, 13 - out of the spotlight, and that's helped their eldest in dealing with the public's perception of the family. Katherine says:
- "My parents always really sheltered us, so when [the separation] started happening, it was like everything came out of nowhere overnight. I would go out to lunch, and literally 20 people would come and scream at me. And I'm like, This is so inappropriate; you're trying to provoke me to have an attack and say something crazy."

Katherine's also trying very hard not to read any headlines, admitting:
- "I see them, but I choose not to read the stories because I figure whether it's true or not, I don't need to. I just focus on my family and everyone being okay instead of following the gossip."
She said she wanted to change her name when she went off to college - a thought that came well before the news of her father's infidelity. She added:
- "I thought of changing it because, especially for dating, it's impossible. It's something I deal with every day, and I am hyperconscious about it. When I got to college, people — much more guys than girls because girls don't give a crap about bodybuilding — were coming up to me, and it would automatically jump to a conversation about my dad and weight lifting or how to do a proper bicep curl. It's like, 'Do you want to date my father, or do you want to date me? Like, I can arrange that for you.'"
