George Clooney beat our Brad Pitt tonight at the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards, presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

The friendly rivals have been verbally sparring ahead of this year's awards season, with Clooney seen as the frontrunner for Best Film with Ides of March and Best Actor for The Descendants. Well tonight half of the critics' prediction came true, with Clooney nabbing the prize for Best Actor in a Drama. Clooney, in his acceptance speech, said he admired Pitt for his humanitarian work and for his work in film.

Michelle Williams won the prize for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for My Week With Marilyn - the same aware Marilyn Monroe herself won for Some Like It Hot. Williams was sure to pay homage to the icon "for putting in my hands this same award that Marilyn Monroe herself won over 50 years ago."

Meryl Streep won the aware for Best Dramatic Actress for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

The Artist continues to be an Oscar frontrunner, having picked up awards for its leading man, Jean Dujardin, for Best Actor; for its musical score; and for Best Comedy/Musical.

Best Director went to Martin Scorsese for Hugo.

Madonna even won a prize at tonight's film awards ... but not for her directing of her first feature film W.E., but for a song on the soundtrack.
