My heart & prayers go out to the victims, families & survivors in Aurora, Colorado last night. It's so tragic, sad & pointless for that horrible man to do what he did. I'll never understand how somebody can have so little regard for human life & feel they have the right to take that away in an instant. Makes me so sad.

After setting off a gas-like substance, he began shooting at those in their seats and continued to shoot at others running for the exits.

The gunman's family released the following statement:

"Our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved. We ask that the media respect our privacy during this difficult time. Our family is cooperating with authorities in both San Diego, California and Aurora, Colorado."

James Holmes is currently in police custody.
