Newly single Katie Holmes took advantage of her newfound freedom last night by attending the 9th Annual Style Awards in NYC, and the Jack & Jill actress dressed to impress in a cream knee length skirt with black embroidery and a sleek black button down. The ex Mrs. Tom Cruise really knows her fashion!

In her first public appearance since her split from the A-list actor, the 33-year-old hit the stage to present an award to style icon Carolina Herrera. A style icon in her own right, Holmes is preparing to show her ready-to-wear collection Holmes & Yang at New York Fashion Week on September 12.

The brunette beauty recently admitted that it takes a thick skin to break into the cutthroat fashion industry. "When you go in and show your clothing, you think that they're going to buy the whole collection. And when they don't, you're like, 'What do you mean? It all goes together. So what do we do with this?' So that was new, but I think that's kind of a life thing - 'What, you don't want all of me?'" she told WWD.
