This is beautiful.

Coldplay paid tribute to Tom Petty last night during their Portland concert after learning of the music legend's death, and they were joined by R.E.M. co-founder and lead guitarist Peter Buck as they sang "Freefallin" to an emotional audience. They opened the show with a minute of silence for the victims of the Las Vegas shooting, too. So much sadness!

Earlier in the day, it was falsely reported that Petty had passed away, but he didn't actually die until later in the evening.

"On behalf of the Tom Petty family we are devastated to announce the untimely death of of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty. He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. He died peacefully at 8:40p.m. PT surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends," Petty's longtime manager said in a statement to People.

Yesterday was really the worst, but this made it slightly better.
